Success Story: T&N + Latex Topper + Adjustable Base

Hey everyone. Just wanted to give our success story for finding a mattress. I started researching this stuff probably about 6 months ago after hurting my back (herniated disk, lower back). Sleeping became pretty tough for me for a while. Our 7 year old Serta was definitely sagging int he middle. BTW I’m 6’1", 200 lbs, and my wife is 5’8" 125lbs. I’ll try to make this as short as possible.

After LOTS of research here an elsewhere (mostly here), we decided to give the Tuft & Needle the first shot. Why not, it was the cheapest and was still made of great materials. We tried it for a few weeks. I was definitely sleeping better but not perfectly. I liked the mattress. It seemed just about perfect to me. But, my wife said it was too firm for her. Her shoulders were hurting and she would wake up with pain just from the pressure points between her body and the firm mattress. So, we were thinking of going with a latex layered mattress. We decided to first try a latex topper on top of the T&N. We ordered 2 soft 3" Talalay latex toppers from SleepEZ. It was pretty nice for a while but ultimately was too soft for me. So, I ordered another medium topper to try on my side. It felt better for me. But, I was still feeling pain in my back and felt like I wasn’t getting enough support in that region. After much wondering if I would ever feel right sleeping again, I happened to look down at the box springs underneath (the 7 year old ones we got with our Serta) and discovered they were sagging int he middle. I never would’ve thought to look at the box springs as the source of the sagging. So, we removed them and tried putting the mattress directly on the floor, but for some reason, that made everything sleep WAY too firmly for both of us. So, we went ahead and ordered an adjustable base we had been considering. We got the Rize Revolution from MattressToGo for a very good deal (like $1866 delivered and installed) because that model was being discontinued. When it finally arrived … HALLELUJAH! We’d finally found what we’d been searching for. No more sag. Perfect support and perfect comfort for both of us. My wife is pregnant and had been getting up twice every night to go to the bathroom. She is totally sleeping through the night and has changed from a light sleeper to a very heavy sleeper. She says it’s because she’s sleeping so comfortably and soundly. And, I’m also sleeping as good as I can imagine.

So, in summary here’s what ultimately worked for us (TLDR version):
Tuft & Needle - Split King (ie two twin XL’s) … Topped with 3" Soft Talalay (blended) topper on Wife’s side and 3" Medium Talalay (blended) topper on my side (both from SleepEZ). All on top of a split king Rize Revolution (from MattressToGo) adjustable base.

Extra details: We were worried that split Twin XL mattresses on top of a split King adjustable base would cause issues with us cuddling in the middle of the bed. That really hasn’t been an issue. We do fine in the middle of the bed. The crack doesn’t really interfere. Also, we just kept the king mattress cover (an old cheapo) and king sheets we had before. We’re both able to adjust the base at different levels and it doesn’t really cause a problem for the king cover and fitted sheet. So, that’s a nice discovery.

All of the customer service folks were good. Robin at SleepEZ has been great. Jeffrey at MattresstoGo was good to work with. And, the various people we talked to at Tuft & Needle were also very friendly and helpful. We even asked if our trial period could be extended from both T&N and SleepEZ because we discovered that the box springs were the issue just as the trial period was ending. Both obliged us and gave us an extra month or so, so that we could try it once the new adjustable bases came in.

We feel we came out with a perfect option for us at a pretty darn affordable price. So, I hope this helps others in their search.

Phoenix, if this post would be better added to some other thread, feel free to move it. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!! You are a Godsend.

Hi vamosjackets,

Welcome back … it’s been a while since we’ve seen you on the forum.

Thanks for taking the time to let us know about all the choices you made and for sharing all your comments and experiences in such great detail. I think your post will certainly be helpful for many other members that read it and I especially appreciate your comments about your foundation (which is one of the most common reasons for a sagging mattress).

Most importantly … congratulations on all the choices you made for your “sleeping system”. It’s great to see that everything is working out so well for you.

Thanks for your kind comments as well and your post is perfect right where it is in it’s own topic

Thanks for the update for everyone, and I’m glad you’re both sleeping better. Sometimes it’s a combination of things. As they used to say on the A-Team, “I love it when a plan comes together!”
