First of all, im 215 pounds. My build is 1" of high density foam, Texas pocket springs 14.75 guage springs with the 3" quadmini on top, and that leaves me with 3" of available space for the top layer.
I discovered that i really enjoy a plush feeling in my bed, and im thinking about using a 3" layer of 20ild latex on top. Im wondering if anyone has experience with this. I tried 2" medium and it was too hard for me, i barely slept.
When i laid on the avocado luxury box top version, that super plush latex on the top felt INCREDIBLE. i actually wanted to spend $6000 on it immediately. Though i know things break down over time and it’d be a shame to buy the whole bed just for the top to break down within a year.
Im trying to replicate that feeling in my DIY build. Im willing to remove the bottom 1" foam to free up a bit of space. What im trying to do is get that plush feeling while not removing the function of the quadmini layer. Thanks in advance!
At 215 lbs, 3" of 20 ILD over QuadMinis is going to feel pretty dang plush. Not crazy but what I would consider within the luxury-soft zone.
If it’s quality latex (especially Talalay), I wouldn’t worry about it breaking down in a year. Latex doesn’t fall apart like cheap poly or memory foam. It’ll soften a bit over time, but not collapse and most certainly not in a year unless the foam experiences (rare, but possible) foam failure.
The bigger thing is alignment.
You’ve already got 3" of QuadMini doing a lot of contouring. If you throw 3" of 20 ILD on top of that, you might end up muting some of that spring “pushback” and letting your hips sink a little more than you want depending on how you sleep.
That Avocado Luxury Box Top feel you loved? Totally get it, because I’m the same. That super plush latex over coils is awesome. But showroom “wow” and 8-hour sleep can be two different things. My back reminds me of this every time I add a too-thick topper to my mattress…lol.
If it were me, I’d consider:
2" of 20 ILD + 1" slightly firmer latex (keeps the plush but adds a little control), or
Try 2" of 20 first before committing to the full 3"
You need to use PU/Memory foam for plushness, even soft Talalay is also bouncy. Try to add 2" 4lb memory foam, and add 1" soft latex, or 1" egg crate poly foam, 1" 4-lb foam, 1" latex. You have to play with these layers. Keep latex to 1" or at most 2".
