I was so excited to receive my new, all talalay mattress after trying a talalay dunlop diy that did not work for my body type. It was basically put together already in the cover, we just had to add the extra 4” piece to complete it. I found a few tears so I contacted the company and sent these photos. I was told small tears and normal and nothing to worry about, that they wouldn’t affect performance. These are approximately 4” and rather deep. I’m not a mattress expert so I’m here to get another opinion on the tears.
Hi TayRay,
Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround.
Thanks for the pictures and for the inquiry.
I would venture to say that most of our latex experts will tell you that you have nothing to worry about with the tear that you have experienced with your latex layers.
Here are some factoids.
While it’s common for manufacturers to downplay minor imperfections, tears that are 4 inches long and deep are more significant than what might be considered “small” and could potentially affect the mattress’s durability and performance.
Even if the company claims that these tears won’t impact performance, they could potentially worsen over time, leading to more significant issues like increased wear and tear, or decreased support.
You might have grounds to ask for a replacement or repair if the tears were present upon delivery. Companies often have policies regarding defects and damage, so it’s worth reviewing their return or warranty policies.
Having said that, very rarely will you find a pinpoint perfect layer without some extremely minor blemish.
Personally, I am the type of individual who would ask for a replacement. Sure it is true you will be covering it with a mattress cover and will probably never think of it again until it is time to get a new mattress, but I just dont like the way the tears look and I would want a replacement.
Will it effect the performance - maybe.
Will you feel like you paid for something that has a blemish to it, yeah, and depending on your personality, it may bother you the entire time of ownership and anything that goes or feels wrong, you will be pointing at the tear.
If you have them exchange it, you will alleviate all worries and concerns going forward.
Best of luck to you,
Maverick.
