How soft is a soft talalay latex mattress topper? I was told you cannot get that “pillow top” feel with latex. Thanks.
The latex topper that I have a topper is 14 ILD. It is very, very soft. I still don’t like latex directly on my body with just a sheet, but with a mattress pad protector over it, the 14 ILD provides good cushion. Might be too soft for some people because this level of softness really doesn’t have much support.
Hi KissesBirds,
Softness and firmness can be very subjective and will also vary based on body type, sleeping positions, and personal preferences and sensitivities and on how each person defines “soft”. There is also no standard firmness for pillowtop mattresses and they can vary from very soft to firm depending on the design of the mattress and the materials inside it (or inside the pillowtop). A pillowtop is a method of construction rather than a firmness level so a pillowtop mattress can use any type of material in the pillowtop (including latex foam, memory foam, polyfoam, various types of natural or synthetic fibers, or other materials as well).
The softest latex (in the range of the 14 ILD that sheep123 owns) is very soft and would be softer than many other materials that are commonly used in a pillowtop but even if it was as soft or softer than a pillowtop mattress that you were comparing it to it would still have a different and more resilient “feel” than other types of materials that are often used in a pillowtop.
The best way to know whether any mattress is “soft enough” for you or how it compares to another specific mattress or even more importantly whether it is a good match for you in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) would be based on your own testing or personal experience because each person can have very different opinions or perceptions.
