Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. After many hours of research, I’m just going around in circles. My latex mattress (from Brooklyn Bedding) is literally turning to dust after 13 years so it’s time for a new mattress. I have hated this thing because it is so heavy and hot. I had to remove the pillowtop, as it felt like a frying pan to me. I replaced it with the Ikea Knapstad topper which is a godsend. It’s the only topper I’ve ever been able to sleep on without frying, and I’ve tried many including wool.
Here is what I’m looking for in a new mattress:
- COOL. Like in the olden days of innerspring mattresses. The coolness would preferably come from airy construction and natural materials (I don’t need organic, just breathable) instead of “cooling technology” which I find does not work.
- LIGHTWEIGHT. Again, like in the olden days. I would like to be able to lift it myself and get the sheets on. Maybe even (gasp) flip it. I am buying a king size so…
- I would like to skip the pillowtop, as these are invariably too hot for me and I want to be able to use my own topper whether that is my Knapstad, or some active cooling thing (that’s another project I guess).
- Good edge control—I don’t want to fall off the thing while getting my socks on.
- Good motion isolation. I realize this checkbox is potentially in conflict with wanting it to be lightweight and cool. It would be great if there were an innerspring mattress that has a motion isolation layer underneath the coils instead of next to me, although I do realize that would mean I could not flip it.
- I need to avoid “zones” of support where the coils under the hips are too firm, as all my weight and all my pain are in my hips and I sleep on my side. I don’t want to feel like I’m sleeping draped over a speed bump.
- Price is no object. I just want to sleep.
- I am 5’7” 120 pounds, side sleeper.
