Just thought Id pop this here. ANyone have exp with this coil. Can you give specifics? Height weight sleep position bed makeup and impressions?
Hi Nate,
I am familiar with the coils but do not have personal experience with it. You may want to check with Trusted Member Mattress Makers. I know they use them in building their mattresses. They are very friendly and nice folks and I am certain they would answer any questions you might have.
Here is a video Quad Coil vs Conventional
I am certain there are others that use them, but these folks came to mind as I remember the video.
Best of luck,
Maverick
Yes Ive been in contac t with them. They do sell the coil unit with their mattress cover. They use the 14 gauge. Just the coil unit and they are willing to sell it without any layers. Except he quoted $1000 item + shipping. Ive also contacted Texas coil. Matan responded and recommended the 15.5 gauge. MUCH cheaper through them $180 + $150 off the top of my head. With MM’s they prob just quoted their default shipping option. IDK if I can haggle a different cheaper option. Ill prob just stick with Texas coil and their website https://www.pocketcoilstore.com/products
Much cheaper and I can choose gauge. So IDK Matan recommends the 15 and MM’s say the 14 would work fine. Im not sure which to get atm.
CUrrent Build. Update. 15G 8" quad coil + 2 inch turmerry medium + 2 in soft talalay (LMF). All wrapped in the SOL mattress cover. Great cover and has good stretch. I like to keep the layers short to give myself more customization room. The combo so far is good but still some pressure points. Thinking of trying SUpersoft 1" or the HD36 1" from foam by mail. THe memroy foam topper helped greatly on my shoulders but too much sink. Still ~ 220 / 6ft. Wide boney shoulders and hips create PP.
Might try the mini coils too from TPS. Different from latex and different feel.
Hi, do you feel like the 15G coils are firm enough? I (5’11 190lb) and my wife (5’3 130lbs) are thinking of getting the TPS quad coils (either 6" custom or 8" through their site) as a base for a latex hybrid. When testing mattresses, we both prefer firm with some bounce.
Based on body weight it seems like the 15G should be fine. But since they are non-returnable and people tend to recommend going slightly firmer if unsure, I am contemplating purchasing the 14.75G.
Yes It is firm enough for me side or back. Just laying on the coils my shoulder and hips sink in. Laying on my back has some decent sink. It isnt plush. I was also thinking about getting the 14G. Im glad I didnt. But im 220lbs 6’. Did you contact Matan over at TPS? I would say that at 130 lbs for your wife it would be plenty firm enough. You would sink in some. If you want firm also then 14 maybe. It may be plank firm for her then IDK tho. There is contouring at my weight when I lay on them side and back. That’s what I wanted and I am going to lose weight so there’s wiggle room. So there will be some sink, but shouldnt bottom out by any means. It is pre compressed. But again talk to matan and see what he recommends. How firm do you want it? Very little sink or contouring? Also what kind of sleeper are you?
Thanks for your reply. I just started my research a few weeks ago. There was one reddit post I came across of someone who preferred firm beds but thought the combination of a firm dunlop layer and 8" 15G coils was too soft. Since they are non-returnable, this seems like worst case scenario and what I am trying to avoid. All the other posts seem to agree 15G was firm enough. I am torn whether to go with the masses (15G) or just get the firmer one (14G) and then add an extra inch of latex in the event it’s too firm. All the mattresses we’ve enjoyed at MF were firm (Serta i-series 2000, BR Black).
I’m planning on a total of 2-4" of latex/foam above the coils, depending how the first med dunlop layer feels. I may just need to do more research and contact Matan directly.
Just realized I didn’t respond to your last questions:
I sleep like 90% back/10% side. Wife is probably 80%back/20% stomach. I sleep hot. We both want to be on top of the mattress not in it. I would enjoy some light conforming to the body. We definitely did not like the stuck in sand feeling from some of the memory foams.
Definitely ask Matan and include all this stuff. Firm enough for me since Im looking for body contouring. BUt I side sleep mostly would like to swap to my back more at some point. I would say when i lay directly on the coils (on my back) they lightly conform. Most of my body is still above the coils its not like I sink in 3 inches. A 30 lbs kettlebell on the coils directly they sink about 2-2.5 roughly. IDK if any of this helps. I know it’s a bit wracking to decide. Again a bit concerned about your wifes weight IDK if the 14 would simply be too firm for her. Hopefully more ppl can chime in here.
Thank you for the context, it is definitely helpful! Going to do a little more research, but curious if anyone else chimes in!
In my opinion….15.5g would be my recommendation. At 190 they will be plenty firm for you and still allow some compression. As you get to the 14.75 you will lose some compression at your weight in addition to the other layers also reducing the compression.
This is exactly what i like in a mattress, i want to sleep on it vs in it…that is essentially the difference between a primary pocket coil set up and foam/latex primary set up.
To me the latex or comfort layer should be a cushion that’s not altering the function of the pocket coils too much.
Thank you for the reply, I’m definitely leaning towards the 15 now.
Hey @iarias07 did you end up going with the 15.5? I am 5’10" 185, trying to decide between 15.5 and 14.75. My plan is just a 3" Medium Latex on top of the coils. I sleep combination stomach, back, side and typically prefer a medium-firm mattress.
Yep I went with the 15.5. No scrim. Im 220 6’0". Ive tried a bunch of diff latex over the past few months. Currently like 28 ILD (medium) tal 3". My hips always sink in a bit too much so I did a little zoning with some foam from FoamByMail. 3 zone soft FIrmer soft. So far I like that better. I also tried one of the quilted mattress covers from SLeepEZ. As stated by others, it does firm up the mattress significantly apples to apples. I wish it would stretch more on the top so I like the stretch knit top better. Not only does it firm it up but it changes the feel since you arent sleeping directly on the latex anymore. What I love about the SLeepez mattress cover is the zipper is at the TOP. I wish the knit covers would do it this way. So much easier to deal with layers from the top down. Esp in the early days of trying out different layer configs. Currently have my coils using the base of the SEZ cover (to keep them in) with the knit cover over that. Im thinking about mod’ing the stretch knit cover with a zipper to put on the SEZ base.
Thanks Nate. Which Foam/Thickness did you go with for the zoning from FoambyMail? My hips sinking too much is the complaint with my wife’s side of the bed. I wonder if the 14.75g would prevent this.
I went with HD36-R Foam + Super Soft Foam 1" thickness. Underneath the latex above the coils. almost 1/3 of the bed in 3 zones. The middle hip zone a bit less in lengh than the softer zones. The 14 is firmer and would limit hip sinkage more, but it would change the overall feel of the bed too. What is height and weight? Personally I have wide shoulders and my back though no major issues and im not kyphotic probably isnt as straight as it could be. Alot of computer sitting for years with some forward head which gives me tension headaches.
I know it’s a bit nerving to choose since you cant return the coils. You like a medium firm you mentioned and honestly there’s probably ways to make that with a 14 or a 15 coil. Did you talk to Matan over at TPS? He probably recommends the 15. It really depends overall on how you build it. Like I put the entire 1" hd36 foam under the tal latex and it did firm it up a bit. There are multiple ways to firm up a mattress like this. Like if I wanted to really firm up my mattress I could use the SEZ cover and just overstuff the thing with material. So unfortunately there’s no guarantee and you kinda just have to do as much research as you can and pull the trigger on something if you doing DIY.
What is you current mattress?
I’m 5’10" 185, athletic build. Most of weight in hips and upper body. I often feel when I try a softer bed that my hips sink too much and then it creates uncomfortable pressure on my lower back.
WHat is your current mattress? DId you speak to TPS people? What is your wifes height weight? I editted my post earlier a bit.
We currently have a Split King Naturepedic EOS- she got the Soft Coils, and I have the Firm Coils. I believe they are 13.75g and 15.5g respectively, but I’m not sure, and may also compare differently to other coils of the same gauge. She is happy with her setup, but I find mine too firm, and would prefer something in the middle. After trying out various top layers to try to get the right comfort, I’ve been debating swapping out the Coils for something in between. I reached out to Matan at TPC and he suggested 15.5g, but I just don’t know if I want something quite as soft as my wife’s side. Seems to me it would be easier to soften the 14.75 than firm up the 15.5, but I guess you could go either way. I currently just have the Naturepedic 3" Medium Latex on top of the coils. I’ve also tried the DIYMattress Combi-Zoned Pocket Coil Springs but didn’t like how pronounced the zoning was, so my wife is about ready for me to be done with ordering non-returnable mattress components that don’t pan out.
