Hi. I purchased a comforter from Amazon. I want to return it, because it is not really what I was expecting. But I heard somewhere that returned bedding products are thrown in the trash and never resold or otherwise reused. I feel badly, because I don’t like wasting things and don’t want the materials and labor used to produce my comforter to go to waste. Is it true that returned linens must necessarily be destroyed? If so, why don’t they donate them somewhere at least?
Thanks,
Todd
Hi Todd,
That’s probably a difficult question to get a single answer to. It will undoubtably vary by retailer and by product. You might be able to ask Amazon what their company policy is for your specific situation.
For sure, not all returned bedding / mattress material is destroyed by all retailers- that I do know. What percentage, as an industry, is destroyed, recycled, donated, resold, refinished, etc., I don’t know, and would be curious myself.
Hi toddking2,
In most cases bedding that has been opened and used (can’t be resold as new) is a non returnable purchase and can’t be returned unless it’s defective. For stores that do allow returns on used bedding though it couldn’t be resold as new but what happens to it would vary by store. It could be donated, sold as used, resold to another business, or in some cases thrown out or destroyed (if it was in unusable condition). There would be no reason I could think of to destroy it unless for some reason there was no other alternative.
