The Mattress Maze

17 years ago we purchased a high end mattress that obviously served our needs well. Two years ago, realizing that we were sleeping more comfortably on hotel beds than our own, we entered the mattress maze. We visited all the local dealers, as well as checking out the hotel beds, and a local manufacturer. We did the “try out the mattress in the store” and could nit make a decision…Finally i ventured on-line to search out reviews.

After an extended search, and three phone calls to the manufacturer, I chose Saatva. It has been noted in several blogs that their team is exceptional, and my experience with them was no different. The three representatives I spoke with were professional, patient, and, in a word, stellar. Based on their suggestions, we chose the luxury firm.

The bed arrived as ordered. We didn’t notice anything at first, but gradually a raised area appeared running down the length of the middle of the bed, where we assumed the two box springs intersected. Additionally, the bed creaked whenever you sat on it, or got in or out of it. As one of the things we were advised to do was to check to see if our old box springs “creaked”, we thought that might be the problem with this set.

I made the call to Saatva, and without asking for a photo (which we had taken), or any further explanation, he immediately said that they would replace our purchase.

I don’t think customer service gets any better than this.

We are expecting delivery of the replacement mattress and box springs today. After moving the mattress off the foundation and sitting on the box springs alone, they were quiet as can be. I am guessing the fault is in the mattress.

We have 75 days to determine whether or not the replacement mattress will work for us.
I am optimistic, as I would like to support a company whose customer service is exemplary. And if it does not meet our needs, I appreciate that set will be donated, at no cost, to a shelter.

I appreciate all the posts and information shared here that helped me make our decision. I will keep you updated. Thanks!

Hi Sstarwoman,

Thanks for taking the time to share your comments and feedback about Saatva … and it’s good to see that they are looking after your issues and providing the kind of service that they are.

I’m not quite clear based on your description whether you are using a box spring (which has springs inside it that flex and may be your old box spring) or a foundation (which has no springs and doesn’t flex) or both (which wouldn’t be a good idea).

It’s also very possible that the reason for the ridge in the middle is that you have two twin XL box springs (king size) that don’t have any flex in the middle of the mattress where their frames meet but do have some flex on each side. This can contribute to the ridge in the middle over the same area where the support system is rigid. This is a common factor that can contribute to a “ridge” in the middle of your mattress and using a foundation that has minimal to no flex at all across the entire support surface can often help this.

If you tried the mattress on top of your box spring on the floor and there was no noise then based on a process of elimination it’s possible that the source of the noise was in the bedframe that you were using (which you may have been calling a “foundation”).

Hello, Phoenix.

To clarify, when we purchased the mattress we also purchased the two twin box springs.
I assume that’s what they were.

Our replacement Saatva bed arrived Friday night as promised. The last three nights were blissful. I have woken up each morning without an occipital ridge headache or any aches and pains. My husband’s snoring is greatly reduced, and he also in pain free.

I will “sleep on it” a few months and let you know how comfortable it is then. If anyone out there is skeptical, I encourage you to try it out.

Sleep well.

Hi Sstarwoman,

Box springs were very common 17 years ago when two sided mattresses were more common so I’m guessing you have a box spring. If you push down on the surface and it has some “give” and flexes under pressure then it would be a box spring and if it has minimal to no flex at all then it would be a foundation. Your mattress would probably do better on a foundation that has little to no flex at all than it would on a box spring that has more flex and after 17 years it may be a good idea to replace it.

It’s good to see that your replacement mattress is working out well for you at least initially.

Hello, Phoenix.

We did purchase the Saatva twin foundations at the same time we bought the Saatva mattress.

Thank you for your continued help and information.

Hi Sstarwoman,

That’s good to hear because their foundations would certainly be suitable for their mattresses
