The Search for a Platform Bed with 3 inch slats

I am desperately searching for a platform bed with 3 inches or less between the slats that is affordable. KD Frames is highly rated, as is Carolina Legs, but both seem to suffer the same flaw of no center support with a big gap. Does that mean it’s not safe to use for a Naturepedic or Avocado mattress?

The other ones that came up are Ironwood (no longer in existence), Arizona Mattress (doesn’t sell any platform beds that I can see anymore), SleepEZ, etc. but these all appear to be a foundation with some legs. What I am hoping to find is a platform bed with slats with less than 3 inches apart that does NOT require a foundation. My plan B is to use a bunkie board and a metal frame but I am concerned about the warranty.

I was hoping to spend under $500 getting a platform frame. I would welcome any suggestions as I have been searching for hours.

Hi Dancingdarling.

I think I the Terra Foundation (@MattressFoundations) fits exactly what you’re looking for! The Terra Mattress Foundation has premium kiln-dried spruce wood slats spaced just 1.5 inches apart (much tighter than the 3” maximum most warranties require). It’s built to handle up to 2,000 lbs and can be used either with or without legs, so you don’t need a separate foundation or box spring.

It’s also easy to assemble, comes with a quilted cotton cover, and has a lifetime warranty. In short, it should give you the sturdy, closely spaced slat support you need without the hassle of adding a bunkie board or worrying about voiding your mattress warranty.

Here’s the link if you’d like to take a closer look.

Thanks so much! I saw this one in my search, but I am looking for a platform bed and this is just a foundation. With legs, it’s only 6 inches and that’s for $600 pre-tax and pre-shipping costs! I will keep this in mind as a total back-up option but this seems on par with the price of a foundation from Avocado or Naturepedic.

Although perhaps I could get bed raisers so I will contemplate if I can’t find anything else.

Lissseeenn, hear me out.

I LOVE this bed. I had a previous Zinus one in my first apartment at the start of the pandemic. It was godawful, slid around slats were garbage, ended up having to get a bunkie board to make it bearable. My next apartment, a studio, I bought this one in full. Not. One. Issue. Slept on it for two years and loved it so much, I just bought the queen one for the second bedroom in my new house. It even has screws included to attach a headboard. For the price, it’s unbeatable.

It’s over 3 inches between slats but thanks for sharing!

It’s actually not. The distance is 2.78”. Look at the top left hand corner of the fourth picture. I have a picture of my own I just took, but I can’t post pics here.

Unfortunately not. The webpage you brought indicates that the slats are 2.83 inches wide and 3.09 inches apart from each other (or 3.9, the page says both). It’s definitely close to 3 inches but I don’t feel comfortable taking chances. I’m glad it has worked well for you, though!

Just look at @MattressFoundations terra foundation and use it as the benchmark to judge other foundations. If you decide on this one, it certainly costs more, but it will likely be the last foundation you will ever have to buy. @Arizona_Premium has a very nice foundation too.

I call the Terra, Terra the Tank. It is built to last, like an old fashioned piece of furniture. With a foundation like this one, you will never be second guessing the choice or it ability to support.

Hi there! I know this post is from last year, but I am wondering if you ever found an option?? I’m in the exact same boat, however my issue with brands like KD Frames and Carolina Legs is that they’re unfinished wood. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and don’t have outdoor space to do all this woodworking to finish the wood. Would love to know if you ever found a solid platform bed with the smaller slat spacing!
