Our Dunlop latex mattress is 12 years old and I am wondering if its time to replace it or if there is a chance to just buy a new top layer. We threw the top layer away because it got dirty and with the top layer missing the mattress is now too soft.
We have 6 layers which account for a 9" total height. The layers don’t have any indents and are spongy, however they are losing tiny bits of material. There are also some small cracks in the layers. There is also some yellow discoloration on one of the layers. I have attached photos below. Thanks!
Based on the age of the mattress, I’d say this is likely just signs of age and, yes, probably time to replace it!
If it’s still feeling supportive, there isn’t a huge rush, but you will start to see a more rapid deterioration in this layer just because it’s old. So, while you may still get a little life out of it…I’d probably start looking around for a replacement for when you’re feeling like “yeah…this…is about to collapse and die.”
Like most materials used in the mattress industry, they definitely dont last for ever. We’ve been selling latex mattresses since 1997, and have found Dunlap processed latex to hold up 10-15 years, and Talalay 15-20 years. Which is many years longer than any other foams used in the entire industry. At 12 years, you’ve gotten great life out of your dunlap components. And you may have a little more left, but not much. Generally i have customers listen to there bodies, your body will let you know if its time for an upgrade.
Over time latex will oxidize, and start to dry out, the yellowing , fracturing in the latex, and crumbling in spots, is to be expected at this date, and not out of the ordinary at all. Your pieces actually look great for being 12 years old.
