Too much latex or just enough?

As I continue to research and test latex mattress, a question came up about the Brooklyn Bedding beds that they offer. One is the 12" Bamboo Bliss with 3" of Talalay Latex as the comfort layer and the other is the 14" Aloe Alexis with 6" of Talalay latex (2-3" inch layers).
Would having the extra 3" layer of Latex foam be that noticable? The Bliss has 8" of 2.17 lb HD foam and the Alexis has 7" of 2.17 lb HD foam. Both have the 1" of ‘soft reflex’ poly foam on the quilt layer.

I suppose my assumption with the 2 3" layers would be that one is slightly firmer than the other, with the softest on top. Would the two layers basically average out to a single layer of 3" foam (if you took the average of the two)?

i would go with the 14" aloe if i were you.

Hi hilliap,

Yes … it would depend to some degree on your body type and sleeping positions but having a latex transition layer is further towards the benefits of an all latex mattress and would also give you more ways to rearrange or exchange layers. You can read more in post #2 here. While all of these types of choices are really about your own personal value equation and based on preference … I would lean towards more latex if I could comfortably afford it.

The difference in the thickness of the polyfoam base would not be significant.

No … foam doesn’t “average out” and layer thickness is just as important a part of mattress construction as layer softness each layer affects the feel and performance of every other layer.

Thanks for the advice! I went ahead and ordered the Aloe Alexis! I did find it a bit odd that I didn’t hear from Brooklyn Bedding to discuss firmness, as I’ve read from other reviews. They just shipped it out with the comfort I originally chose. Not worried, since they have a great exchange policy and looking forward to getting it next week! I did get a double bonus: the 5% discount and 2 free pillows since I ‘Liked’ them on Facebook!

Hi Hilliap,

I think that’s probably because the “comfort discussions” you read about were on some of their Amazon mattresses which didn’t have the option to include your choice in the order process. The mattresses on their own site include the comfort choice as part of the order so these types of discussions would normally need to happen before you place the order with the mattresses listed on their Brooklyn Bedding site.

Congratulations on your new mattress

I noticed that I ordered a bed from them last Saturday and I did not see a response email when I got home on Monday. I had checked my spam account and there was nothing there either. So I called and spoke to Chuck on Monday afternoon to see why I had not gotten any response from them. He showed that it had been sent on Saturday.

It turned out that for whatever reason their email response to my Yahoo mail had gone directly to the Trash folder. I had received it on Saturday a few hours after I had ordered.

I then decided to use my work email instead and have had no problems since.

So if you are not seeing “expected” emails, check your trash folder as well as your inbox and spam folders.
