I’m looking for advice on choosing a mattress topper for a new mattress I recently purchased.
Based on your recommendations, I visited two stores:
First, I went to a Vispring store in NYC. I loved the Vispring beds, but they were outside my price range. The experience was excellent though, and I really liked how different toppers changed the feel of the mattress. One of my favorite toppers was actually from a latex mattress brand they carried called Obasan. The Vispring toppers were great as well.
Second, I visited Gardner Mattress in Massachusetts and ended up purchasing their Organic Ultra Luxe mattress. It’s a high-quality bed using similar natural materials (horsehair, wool, etc.) but at about half the cost of Vispring.
Now I’m looking for a topper to fine-tune the feel of the mattress.
My goal is to get that luxury hotel “pillowtop” feel while still maintaining support. I want a little plushness but don’t want to compromise support because the whole reason I replaced my previous mattress was that it had become too soft.
One complication is that Vispring and Obasan toppers don’t offer trial periods, which makes it risky to buy without testing it on my new mattress.
A few questions:
1. I really liked the Obasan wool + latex topper, but I’m not sure if it only felt great because it was on top of a latex mattress. On a mattress like the Gardner Organic Ultra Luxe, would latex/wool, wool-only, or microcoil toppers typically work better?
2. What materials would you recommend for someone wanting light plushness with strong support?
3. Are there high-quality topper brands around $1,000 or less that offer trial periods?
My rough budget is around $1,000.
I’d appreciate any recommendations on materials, brands, or specific toppers that would work well for this situation.
