Almost every night I wake up hot around 2-3am, get out of bed, stay awake for an hour or more, cool off and then go back to sleep. I’d like to get a topper and I think I’ve decided to go with either a wool or natural latex (or hybrid?). It’s only going on half of my king. I don’t have pressure or joint pain. It’s mostly about retaining heat.
I’d love to hear suggestions and thoughts please. Not only for which toppers handle body heat better, but which might be easier to cover only half the bed in.
Current mattress is a S&F Camdenhurst Luxury plush covered with a duck feathers topper. Planning to keep the mattress and ditch the feather topper.
I did attempt a search on the forum, but didn’t quickly find pertinent results. Sorry for being lazy. Thanks for all help.
Isn’t that mattress already plush? It seems to me that you might have been sinking in too far and there’s no open space around your skin to release heat. What sheets do you use?
A non-electric solution I’d consider is an all-wool topper. A 2–3" wool topper should provide a very temperature-neutral sleep environment while still adding some cushioning without the contouring/pushback feel of latex.
If you want to take breathability/temperature regulation even further, a horsehair topper is probably one of the best fiber options for sleeping cool and neutral. They’re certainly more specialized, but the airflow and moisture management can be excellent. I have horsehair pillows and no other fiber keeps your heat neutral.
The saying, everything between your and the floor matters, could not be more true. Therefore, I’d also look beyond the topper itself. Check your mattress protector, sheets, and comforter/blanket. If any of those are primarily synthetic materials, they could be contributing significantly to the heat buildup. For sheets, I’d look at 100% linen or 100% cotton, and a wool-filled comforter can also be a good option for temperature regulation.
Since you’re only covering half of the king, I’d lean toward wool in your situation simply because it should be easier to source/use as a half-bed topper than a latex slab, while also fitting your primary goal of reducing heat rather than addressing pressure or joint pain.
Yes. I suspect this is true. Thanks for bringing it up
My understanding was that if i got a topper made of all natural materials (like wool and natural latex) that it would breathe better and not store the heat even if it was soft. Is that not true?
Wool is a temperature regulator, your feather topper is an insulator. With a wool topper you actually nest into the topper. You sleep on top of a latex topper. Neither is “better” just a different sleeping experience. A latex topper can change your sleep position given the thickness of the latex. If the mattress doesn’t need more cushion go with wool. Holy Lamb Organics made here in Oregon makes a 1.5" and 3" wool topper. The 1.5" may be just enough for your needs.
Hi, if retaining heat is your main problem, then a wool topper is the way to go like what Maverick said. There’s plenty of options available on the market but one that I tried and I think really works well is the Naturepedic 3” Wooly Topper. Wool is amazing at temperature regulation (keeping you cool) and wicking away moisture. And wool toppers are super comforter… it feels like you’re floating in a cloud.
