Topper Sliding

Hello and thank you for this wonderful forum. In part, thanks to it we recently purchased

  • Otis Bed Gemini II futon mattress
  • The Futon Shop 2" Dunlop latex mattress topper
  • St Dormeir wool mattress protector

This feels wonderful, and our sleep and health are improving. There is however one problem. The topper slides off the bed each night. We thought the combination of protector and fitted sheet would prevent this. The mattress and the topper are each covered in organic cotton sheathing so there is no friction bewtween them. We looked on Amazon thinking this must be easy to solve. What we found are hundreds of other people with the same problem, and no concensus about what works and what does not.

We have only found high-quality well-researched information here so we returned. Surprisingly, searches on slipping produced nothing, but there must be memembers or expert members who can make tried and tested suggestions. Thank you in advancefor your help.

As your mattress is not too thick, you should be able to use some of the elastic-style fitted sheet holders and clip those on to the fabric encasement of your topper in the corners. The triangulated ones should be able to help keep things in place. There’s a bunch of different styles listed here. The tautness of your mattress (10" of material compressed and tufted into an 8" border) is helping to contribute to your lowered coefficient of friction. I’d avoid some of the suggestions you may see online of spraying things like hair spray between your mattress and topper. Also, you may read about using certain kitchen shelf liners between a mattress and a foundation to help to prevent sliding, but I don’t recommend placing this between a mattress and a topper, as it will modify point elasticity.

Hopefully that gives you a good start.

Thank you Jeff. We were not even aware of this type of product. We had been planning to use Gorilla Grip once we realized there is a slipping problem. However, reviews are so mixed – we read many dozens – that one wonders if the same product is being discussed. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Yes you can find a clip online as a solution.

GhostBed just launched a mattress topper 2 weeks ago that has a built in protector and skirt.

We designed it to have deep pockets with our 2" GhostGrip that is an extra thick elastic to help keep the topper in place to not slip on the mattress.

The challenge with some toppers is that it does not have a skirt to tuck under the mattress and just has the simple corner thin elastic bands.

However try a bedding skirt clip or the clamp mentioned to see if that will help.

Thanks Brian. We are ordering clips today. I’ll post the results when we receive them.

As promised, here is our followup. We looked at the clips and straps that were recommended. The basic design, one at each corner, seemed very likely to do the job. Then we read reviews, more than one hundred of similar products from multiple firms. It became clear that the clips are single-sourced and have a high failure rate, due to the poor material used… I then took a long look at marine supply sources, figuring that ships and boats need a variety of clips and they must not fail. I found sources for quality nylon webbing also. Before finalizing our choice of parts and making certain that they would all work together as a system, I decided to try a much more rapid experiment, and ordered Gorilla Grip. This works as promised. I’ve waited roughly six weeks to be certain no problems emerged. We change bed linens weekly and by the time we do there is a slight shift in our topper. That is an acceptable result for us. If anyone else has a sliding topper problem try this. Thanks again to the forum moderators and to those you helped with our issue.
