For whatever reason I’m having trouble falling into a deep sleep on our new latex hybrid mattress. At first it was too firm, and I had a couple of nights where I felt like I felt like I was in a super light sleep stage (or not asleep at all) for the entire night, which I chalked up to discomfort due to the mattress being too firm. I slept on a different mattress for a couple of weeks while we exchanged for a softer topper.
Last night was the first night with the new topper, which is definitely softer and more comfortable, and I spent the second half of the night in a very light sleep stage again, even though I wasn’t in any discomfort. I’ve been sleeping on uncomfortable mattresses for at least a year now, so I’m used to not sleeping well due to discomfort, but this feeling like I can only sleep lightly (and waking a million times) that I’m having on the latex mattress is something else. My body actually feels great this morning pain-wise (I have low-grade chronic pain isses), and even my bad shoulder (which is almost always sore in the morning due to side sleeping) doesn’t hurt, so I don’t think it’s an issue of the mattress still being too firm. I almost wonder if my brain regards the bounce/pushback of the latex as a threat or something so it won’t relax into sleep. (My nervous system is annoyingly sensitive to all sorts of things.)
How long does it take to adjust to sleeping on latex, or how long would you give it before deciding you need something other than latex? Or is there a topper material that might be a good choice to counteract the pushback feel of the latex? I had a 1.5" eggshell memory foam topper on it last night, which clearly wasn’t enough to change the feel of the latex enough for my brain to relax. If it matters, I’m 100% a side sleeper and on the light side at 5’8" & 125 lbs.
