Twin to TwinXL - can it be done?

I’m currently wracking my brain to figure out how to extend a twin size mattress to a twin XL, short of cramming junk in the gap - which is not beyond me at this point

What would the best approach to such a thing? Order a chunk of latex as gap filler? or literally fill with pillows? Or am I looking at disaster?

Why - I’m sure you ask - well we are sleeping on a Queen and it’s time to go the split King for many reasons. We have a daybed with a lovely organic latex mattress on it, it’s a twin and hubby loves to snooze on it not to mention the cost of a new one. I will happily go another route for the daybed, but meanwhile have to find me a twin XL for my side and that is an alligator that I alone can wrestle with. It occurred to me that if I can fill that gap under his rock like head with something reasonable then we can save a grand and still sleep.

Maybe it’s nuts, and I’m sure you will tell me so - but I am getting desperate here. Thank you

I’m tall, and for a couple months i was on a twin mattress, my solution was to put a box behind the bed with towels ontop, then pillow. very ghetto, but it allowed me to actually fit on the bed.

Disadvantage is that firmness of the box section was obviously different, and the edge of the mattress was obvious. Even if you match the latex exactly, the top of the mattress will feel different. I would just get a new mattress for permanent use

HotPinkDragon - thanks for the reply, it makes sense to me. I can find a chunk of latex at various places, or I can use a bolster, or a pile of blanket/pillow. I had not considered a box - but love the creativity. Most of the time my hubby sleeps all over the bed, but favors tummy and then he scoots down in the bed to hang his feet off the end (go figure now why do I need XL? ha ha) The area where the head or pillows actually go will be the least used surface of his side unless we are chillin in front of the tv.
That being said - his sleeping habits are why we need a split King and get his nightly flip flopping/cover stealing off the block of jello that I share with him. Never mind he’s a bed hog:)
I know a new mattress is the best answer, but honestly this is all eating up a lot of groceries and the simple fact that you did it even for a little while gives me hope.

Hi SallyS,

If it was me and I wanted to convert a twin into a twin XL size (normally 5" longer) then I would buy custom cut foam layers to the size you needed and that were similar to the layers in the mattress itself and add them to the foot end of the mattress and then enclose them all in a new tight fitting cover that fit the larger twin XL size and was the right thickness to fit the layers of your mattress.

If you really wanted to you could also glue the new layers to the ones that were in your mattress but this probably wouldn’t be necessary because the cover and friction would probably hold them together.

Since the particular mattress is a 6" core with a tiny comfort layer - this will not require glue - hooray, and Phoenix I thank you for the confirmation - - thinking right along the lines I was.
There will be a topper will be encased along with mattress by a nice mattress cover, then sheets, etc -
