ultimate dreams latex vs. gel memory foam

I’d thought the latex was supposed to sleep cool, but now see lots of reviews complaining about both heat and deterioration over a year or less. Is the gel memory foam dreamfoam a better bet? All opinions appreciated.

Hi sarth,

Latex is the most durable of all the foam materials (including even high quality/density memory foam) and in general is the most breathable and “coolest” type of foam as well. I don’t know where you are reading “lots” of reviews about deterioration or heat (because they would be a small percentage with any latex mattress).

Heat issues can be the result of many things besides the type of foam used in the comfort layers of a mattress including the type of protector or sheets that someone is using on the mattress. There is more about the many variables that can affect sleeping temperature in post #2 here.

There can also be many reasons for a mattress softening or developing impressions (including a small percentage of mattresses that may be defective). There is more about some of the reviews you may be reading in post #2 here and there is also more about the many variables that can affect durability and the useful life of a mattress in post #4 here and the posts it links to. Reading too much into reviews that don’t include the specific information you need to know why a particular customer is having the issues they are having can be very misleading (see post #13 here for more about reviews).

Having said all that … the durability of a mattress relative to each person is one of many factors involved in choosing which mattress may be best for you (there is more about the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase in post #13 here) and the choice of material is always a matter of personal preference. There is more about comparing memory foam to latex in post #2 here that may be helpful in your choice although your own personal testing and experience is really the best way to know which of the two materials you tend to prefer.
