Phoenix: you mentioned that Sleeponlatex sells Latexco Paralux and I suspect this is what Ultimatesleep.com is also selling as their economy “Talalay” ( https://www.ultimatesleep.com/talalay-latex-toppers) . I purchased a Medium 2" topper (“Latex Sleep Therapy”), marketed as Talalay. From several e-mails I was able to determine they get their “Talalay” from the Latexco/GA plant, which only makes dunlop (verified this with that plant directly today)
The Latexco rep confirmed today: “Latexco does not make Talalay. We sell some Radium Talalay from our California factory to many internet customers. See the attached for a description of the two processes.” (I am also attaching the file for reference) .
The Ultimatesleep rep described their “Talalay” process as follows: “The original Talalay Process included the flash-freezing step as a way of preventing the air bubbles in the batter from rising and causing a stratification of density from top to bottom, because the total process was slow enough in a batch molding process that such would occur. There is no other reason for that step of the process. Most modern Talalay Processes actually use a semi-continuous batch process that allows for a much faster curing of the latex batter before the air bubbles have an opportunity to cause a density stratification. This process is also much more energy efficient (rather than freezing and then cooking), and makes the product more affordable.”
This description is accurate as it relates to Latexco’s continuous dunlop process, it just does not correspond with the facts about a True Talalay process, so they are either very confused, or intentionally misrepresenting what they sell as Talalay.
I will say that for the price, this product is springy and supple and appears to be a good quality if you don’t want Talalay. Assuming it is the Paralux, Latexco seems to be producing a very good dunlop product in that line. It does have a sightly darker/firmer side and a lighter/softer side and the holes are punched, (not pin-core molded). I am not overly impressed with the tear resistance, so it is not as durable (IMO) in tear-resistance as what I would prefer (and assume Talalay is better for) in a top layer, but unfortunately I don’t have any personal experience with real Talalay to compare directly in this regard.
And now, for the rest of the story: I also bought a 2" layer of their Firm “Talalay” which was really firm. I rolled it up for about a week and when I unrolled it again, it had formed several splits on the outer side of the roll (the darker side) in both directions-- one split went all the way through for about a foot from one end. I sent pictures to Ultimatesleep and they were very good about issuing a refund–they said neither they or Latexco had seen a topper with the magnitude of splitting like mine, that it was rare and that when they have had any splitting complaints, it was always with the firm and never the softer toppers. I have had no tearing or splitting with the medium, but I can tell is not very tough from some small surface fissures that can be seen when it is folded.
Overall I would grade Ultimatesleep.com as follows:
Customer Service A (except for accuracy in their facts about their products)
Value B+ (for Dunlop)
Product Quality B+ (for Dunlop )
Truth in advertizing F (they will hopefully rectify this, as they do not seem like a bad company to work with otherwise, but this is a deal killer since I don’t know what to believe now).
