Hi all, I’m so happy to have stumbled across this website. Hubby are beginning our search for an upgrade in size (now have a dog sharing my side). Our last mattress purchase was an epic fail! We were uncomfortable and miserable after just a couple years in and hope to make a better decision this time.
After reading through the info here, I feel like I have a better understanding of how to look for a replacement.
We are close to Fox Mattress and a Denver Mattress, will those suppliers help with step 2 (and can they help me choose a correct pillow)? Also, should I mention that our 65 lb dog shares my side (could her added weight make a difference)?
Just for info, I have recently had to train myself to be a back and side sleeper due to lower back pain waking me up. I’m 5’0", 120 lb, low BMI (very bony), toss and turn, wake up with shoulder and lower back pain and sleep HOT.
Hubby is a side and back sleeper 5’8" 180 lb, relatively low bmi and also wakes with shoulder and lower back pain.
Thanks for all the info!
Hi Mirose.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum.
Fox and Denver absolutely can help you find a pillow.
That’s great! What was it that you’ve learned? What was it that didn’t work out about the last mattress?
Yes and no? If she causes you to sort of slope into her, it could disturb your sleep posture which may contribute to pain.
I would mention the sleeping hot to the manufacturers you visit. In general, synthetic foams are going to sleep hot (as they collapse under your body heat as you sleep and create a deeper cradle).
Are there any specific models you’re looking at at Fox and Denver that I can help evaluate with you?

Hi, Nikki, thanks for getting back to me. I’ve learned much about the different layers that go into a mattress and how they affect longevity, support, air flow…everything.
Our last purchase was at a mattress firm store and we literally layed on two or three mattresses for just a couple minutes before purchasing a pillowtop that felt comfy and was near the top of our budget.
We haven’t landed on a specific mattress, yet, but I’m somewhat leaning towards Fox because I like that they’re manufactured locally. I plan on trying out flippable innersprings (which we’re used to) as well as latex. Hubby and I both like a soft feel but always thought we needed a firm mattress. Due to our shoulder and lower back pain upon waking, I’m now not sure which is why I’m excited about getting help with PPP.
The one thing we like about our current mattress is that even 7 or more years in, we don’t feel each other’s movements through the mattress, so we’ll be sure to look for that in our replacement.
I may have more questions after visiting the store, but the only one I can think of at the moment is another pillow question. How often should pillows be replaced typically? I feel like I need a replacement every 6 months or less due to waking with neck pain and headaches. Strangely enough, my favorite pillow of all time was one of those as seen on tv buckwheat hull pillows.
Thanks again!
