Value in mattress protectors

I’ve read the mattress protector thread here and it dawned on me that while we spend so much time trying to find “value” in mattresses, there hasn’t been much attention paid to finding value in mattress protectors. I’ve been looking for a water resistant/waterproof breathable mattress protector and recommendations such as St. Dormier and Cozy Pure cost about $200 or more for a king size. I would venture that these mattress protector costs at least 10% of the mattress cost and most likely 20-30% (or more) for most people here. Worse, many of us are looking for protectors that does little to change the feel of the mattress. That’s like buying av equipment and looking for cables that do as little to degrade the signal as possible. Necessary? Yes. Value? Debatable. Law of diminishing returns? Most likely.

So what’s my question? Well besides there being “different” mattress protector what are some good values in mattress protectors that provide protection, are washable, and do very little to the feel of the mattress (IMO that means comfortable)?

Hi Goosey,

The mattress protector thread includes a couple of links that lead to post #1 here and post #1 here which has some of BobP’s great research into some of the membrane protectors and may be what you are looking for.

More than that and I think the law of diminishing returns, the similarities between them (based on the fabric they use with the membrane) and overly complex technical information about the different types of membranes and fabrics may lead to more time, effort, and study than it may be worth.

For those who may be more technically inclined there is a little more information and some links to sites that talk about the different types of membranes in post #2 here but this can get very technical and may not be of real interest to most people who just want something that works well and is reasonable value.
