Want a quality durable mattress

Hi all. I’m looking for a replacement for a (what turns out to be) a low quality mattress that is failing after three years use.

THe current mattress is 9": base layer 1.9lb HD foam. Mid layer some sort of MD foam, memory foam top layer. It was quite comfortable in the beginning.

I’m a side sleaper, 5’ 9 1/2" 200 lb.

In general, I prefer a firm mattres. The one I had previous to the most recent was a single slab firm mattress that lasted 10 years.

I Want something much more durable than the current mattress.

Looking at the current range of offerings I’m leaning towards an adjustable latex mattress. The idea of swapping or replacing layers rather than throwing out the mattress because it has changed too much is appealing.

There is not a lot in the way of latex mattresses close to me to try. I was able to try a natura Echo Refresh which has a 4" dunlop base layer and a 2" soft talalay layer. The top layer felt mushy when I sat on it (my posterior bottomed out with (almost) a thud, but laying on my side I was quite surprised at how supportive it felt.

The concern with this model is that as the top layer softens the firm layer will not give enought for a side sleeper and the mattress does not have replaceable layers. I suspect I will have similar problems to my current mattress.

If I understand correctly, for a pocket spring mattress the foam is the weak link. I’m not keen on relying on foam on a one sided mattress to hold up as well as an all latex mattress. Am I missing anything here?

Since I don’t really have a preference of mattress type for comfort/feel, does it make sense to narrow my focus to an all latex mattress?

Since I’m fine with the feel of a basic talalay/dunlop mattress will that translate to an all dunlop mattress, particularly since I prefer a firm mattress?

FWIW I’m in Ontario Canada.

fredk, welcome to the Mattress Underground!
In Toronto, Obasan makes high-quality, durable latex mattresses.
(We sell them also, but are in the US).
I highly suggest you give them a look.

Their quality stands out because:
They use latex (not blended latex or synthetic latex)
They wrap the latex layers in cotton so that they do not shift (shifting can cause degrading)
You can replace layers if needed.
They have several models at various price points; look at their regular models, which have a lot of customizability, and also the Auberge.
You can flip and rotate the layers to help with longevity and durability.

They make very comfortable and durable mattresses.
Good luck with your search!
