We are in Mattress Shopping “Hell”, it seems like

At the risk of sounding like we’re 100 years old, ‘they just don’t make ‘em like they used to’. HAS ANYONE PURCHASED AND LIKE THE COSTCO SEALY LINCOLN PARK Pillow top-we chose soft top-??? We Just wanted a traditionally made King size mattress that will at least be comfortable through the warranty period-and hopefully beyond. (And with solid customer care in a company that doesn’t try to avoid honoring the warranty process, as we’ve sadly read is the new norm for lots of companies in the world today.). Now learning the Stearns and Foster Reserve pillow top at over $6,000 we are trying out- into week 2 and was hoping it’s gonna soften up-I learn now that both myself and the salesperson were incorrect in thinking the warranty period was 20 years. Apparently, S&F reduced their warranty to 10 years in 2022, or so. That gives me pause.
While at a Dr’s appt yesterday when she asked how we were sleeping, hubs has severe back injury disability from his Navy days..and we lamented how hard it’s been to chose one and the new one is apparently ‘uncomfortable’ for quite awhile until you break it in, etc…and how disappointing that was when you pay so much…she said, “Why haven’t you just ordered a good one from Costco? They always take returns no question, etc. I confirmed that with Costco, who said they don’t have a ‘sleep trial period, because they will take a return at any time”. So that triggered another deep dive on the traditional beds available thru Costco and have decided to order the Sealy Lincoln Park pillow top and set it up in an extra room while we compare. I really wanted to think that by shelling out big bucks for the ‘best available’ with a 20 year warranty this S & F could be the last bed we ever bought. I guess we’ve swung the opposite way with hopes this Sealy will be ‘good enough’ at $1199…(and still has a 10 year warranty) but worse case scenario…Costco will take it back or give us another one or we’ll eventually have to ‘eat’ the $1199 cost and just have to buy another one in future years.
We’ve learned there is always an issue with certain types of beds and how they hold up when you jump from the queen to a King (the roll up types were all disasters that sunk into a channel right down the middle from day 1). Had and hated the Sleep Number, the Dream Cloud , and “Puffy” , my nieces preference for her entire family. It was problem instantly and they were the WORST to work with on the matter. It’s frustrating to be a stage in life when you have a little bit of money you’re willing to invest in something so important as a good mattress but can’t find the quality and service with great reviews on dealing with their warranty process. It just takes you back to a ‘wing and a prayer’ and save your money and buy cheap, I guess.

Mattress shopping is so difficult. It’s just a tough process. Laying on something with your shoes on for 10 minutes in store is nothing at all like trying to sleep on it for hours, day after day. It’s almost impossible to compare mattresses between stores and online. Everything is named something different everywhere you look. I’ve seen a bunch of people recommending buying via Costco, and I can see the appeal. Easy returns make such a big difference!

I went in a different direction, buying a custom-made mattress from a company that’s represented here. I went for all-latex - that was my husband’s preference. I do have a 20 year warranty, but even better, I have their support all along. I can change out layers within my mattress if I need to, at any time. That’s pretty cool. (But if I had to fully return the over-100lb mattresses, I’d probably cry!)

Good luck with whatever you decide to try. Hopefully you’ll be sleeping comfortably soon.

We were trying to put it into an all encompassing allergy protection bag a few days ago and HOLY COW…..my back still hurts from just trying to Stand it up!! Anyway, love to know what brand you are using.

We went with a split king from Sleep EZ. They customized our bed to our needs - literally, I listed out some information (my and my husband’s weights and preferred sleeping positions, plus some info we learned about what we liked from testing mattresses in local stores) and they suggested the layers they thought would work best for our needs. Ours is 10” total, from the bottom: 3” firm dunlop latex, 3” medium dunlop, 3” medium talalay latex on top.) The mattress gives us fantastic support, especially in comparison with the too-soft memory foam bed we switched from, which was killing my back. We both wanted just a little more plushness, but we didn’t want to change a thing about the mattress otherwise because the support is perfect. So we added a 3” soft talalay topper on each side of the bed, and it’s practically perfect in every way. Amazing support, all the cushion we could want. It’s making a difference in the amount and quality of my sleep - as a lifelong insomniac, I’m impressed.

All that said, latex isn’t for everyone. My husband and I happen to like the feel, but I know not everyone does. But at ~half the cost of the S&F you mentioned testing out, we’re totally sold.
