We have another king we want to replace either with new similar “feel” - whether that is coils or not - this I think is over 20 years and still holding up - not getting rid of it, but time for another

Its weird as it says the date of manufacturer was 2020, unless 2-3-20 means 2000. Nonetheless look at a DLX Premier Hybrid. Or look at one of the @WinndomMattress Winndoms in your firmness preference.
If the S&F is 20+ years old, you will have a more difficult time finding one that matches up today to the level from 20+ years ago.

Yes, I think around 2000 is when we bought it, so guessing that is what it means – did not know if I could tell what firmness level that was from the tag or not @DLX - Interested in the Premier Hybrid - Looking at a split King with two adjustable foundations, but not hard sold on that - would like to find a spit head/flex top - but don’t see those except sleep number, although I do see the bases
Thanks for considering DLX! We don’t currently offer a split head option. With a split head, the foot section still raises and lowers together so the only way to have full independent adjustability is by using two Twin XL mattresses which equal a King. We do understand why a split head is appealing if you mainly want to elevate the head without completely separating the bed.
As for your older Stearns & Foster, mattresses from that era in your area typically used an open coil unit similar to a Holland Maid design which we believe isn’t produced anymore. Those were usually around 12–13 gauge with a coil count in the 400–500 range for a full size, and had left- and right-hand turn coils. Our Premier Hybrid wouldn’t replicate that exact feel, as it’s a different construction.
If you did want an open coil to work on an adjustable base, you’d need to find a manufacturer who uses a helical wire running side-to-side and can cut the border rod while capping the head and foot of the unit.
If you’re considering the DLX Premier Hybrid, happy to give you advice on whether it might work for you. Feel free to email us with your approximate height, weight, and sleep position. If you want something with a similar level of support but not quite the same feel, we’d lean toward our 12" model as the 6" pocket coil in that mattress will give you more support than the 8" in the 14" version. We usually don’t recommend it for side sleepers, but if you found your old Stearns & Foster comfortable as a side sleeper, you might be the exception to the rule.

Thanks – As I recall, the mattress was ordered from a store in Chicago and delivered via 18 wheeler right to door - I think you are correct about the 12 gauge as I watched a video today of one being cut apart. I am not interested in the sleep number (first place I saw the split head) - but in last couple of days I’ve come across several adjustable bases that were made in the split head, so thought there must be mattresses out there too - but haven’t found any. I am 6’2" and 225 and sleep mostly on back, but some side – wife is 5’1" and 100 and mostly on side/stomach with some on back. The split in middle gives us pause on two twinXL’s - that is why the split head appealed. But willing to consider a one piece king adjustable and mattress - maybe with split comforts? Would like to try out a all latex in a store, but can’t find one around Montgomery Alabama. I do like edge support as I catch myself sleeping on edge a lot. I’ve gone the full gammit from Wink to now this and many in the middle - and still yet to pull the trigger – thanks
There are quite a few companies out there selling split head mattresses beyond Select Comfort. Probably too many to list, but a quick Google search turns up quite a few options. There’s actually a manufacturer Royal Bedding in Pelham, Alabama (might be a bit of a drive from you) that could be worth a call. We’re not affiliated with them and can’t speak for their products, but they make their own mattresses which is always a good sign. In our experience, companies that build in-house tend to use higher-quality materials, offer better pricing, and have the flexibility to do custom work like a split head if possible. According to their website, they also sell latex mattresses, so it might be worth reaching out.
On the edge support side, no online mattress is going to match your current Stearns & Foster. With an open coil unit, you’ve got a border rod along the top and bottom plus, in some cases, additional edge springs which was common back then. If you move to an adjustable base, you’ll naturally lose some of that rigidity since the mattress needs to flex. There’s always a trade-off there.
For DLX, given your height, weight, sleep positions, and your focus on edge support, we’d lean toward the LatexLux 12" in a split medium/soft. Both our 12" and 14" hybrids have two rows of coils along the edge, but the 12" uses a 6" pocket coil unit, which gives better edge support than the 8" in the 14". While it still won’t be exactly like your S&F, it’ll be closer and latex is naturally more buoyant and resilient so you tend to sleep more “on” it than “in” it which also helps with that rolling-off-the-edge feeling.
