Weight of latex mattresses

I’m surprised by how few - if any - online retailers openly divulge the weight of latex mattresses which is significant compared to standard mattresses. I’m a single woman looking to purchase a queen size latex mattress and live on the third floor of a city apartment. I’m 5’4" about 120 lbs and while I can lift my 60 lb bulldog when necessary, I’ll need some help moving a fully assembled latex mattress!

I’m opting for a split configuration mostly to ease the process of assembling the mattress - and reassembling it if I need to exchange a layer or worse yet, return the whole thing.

A few questions:

  • Once assembled is it recommended to disassemble a latex mattress into its smaller pieces when moving to a new home? Any suggestions on how to keep them protected; how to compress them?
  • Is it common for a gap to develop at the center of the mattress when sleeping on a split configuration?
  • If I don’t have a need for a split configuration should I consider the single layer configuration option?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi sncorswim,

There’s a few ways to approach this. If you have the manpower and the room to maneuver you can use a cardboard mattress box and carry the whole thing.

You can use a mattress bag (usually 2 mil) to protect it and then fold it in half. This is harder because the latex is really floppy and needs a few hands but you can bend it around corners … again if you have the manpower.

You can take the half layers out (of fold the full layers in half) … fold them up in thirds, and then put them in boxes or bags that are large enough to hold them without compressing the latex.

If you want to compress them to save room or shipping cost … then you will need two bags and you can follow the instructions here as a guideline.

No

I would personally use split layers because you have better options to re-arrange layers if necessary and move them when necessary but there would be an argument to have the top layer as a single layer so that they are exactly the same on each side and there is no possibility of feeling a split although I have not heard any instances of this being an issue for someone.
