I’m about to post on Mattress Underground forum and want to quickly get together a clear conversation post.
Hi! We’re on the hunt for a a new mattress after about 12-14 years of our current mattress—a “Eurotex Hybrid from the Benessere Collection: Rosabella” that we picked up at a department store in our early 20s. We’ve been waking with some general soreness, especially in my lower back and feel like it’s probably time.
I’m 5ft 10, 160lbs and sleep all over the place — lots of tossing and turning, but I probably sleep the most on my stomach or side, though I like to sleep on my back when I can. I tend to sleep pretty hot.
My wife is about 100lbs, similarly is a combination sleeper, but probably sleeps most often on her side.
We’re fairly set on a latex hybrid. We originally started looking at Avocado—and mostly settled on their current Green Medium with a topper or their current pillow top (which is functionally the same as the medium with a topper, minus a few details).
But I’ve been down the rabbit hole of research, which has brought me here. I’m seriously considering some kind of a DIY option, sparked by seeing a semi-DIY option from Turmerry. I like what I read and see there. And then more recently I’ve learned about Arizona Premium Mattress, which also seems like it may be a solid option.
Ultimately, we would want to try to mimic the feel of the Avocado Green Medium with topper, I think. It seems to be pretty close to having the support we need, and the topper helps with my wife’s light frame side sleeping. But I can’t help but feel like I’m paying a lot of marketing, and ultimately could end p with a significant investment that may or may not last. It seems that perhaps they’ve changed some things and quality may be lower than what it used to be while costing much more.
Thankfully, Avocado offers a pretty detailed layer by layer breakdown of their mattress, so I think we should be able to dial it in somewhere pretty close.
Here’s what Avocado say for their layers (the pillow top / plush option, which is a medium bed with extra layer of foam:
- Organic Cotton Ticking — 97% organic cotton with 3% elastane; wraps the entire mattress
- Organic Wool — 1 oz/sq. ft.; natural flame barrier; sourced from certified farms in India
- Nonwoven Layer — GOTS-compliant functional accessory; prevents wool from shifting
- GOLS-Certified Organic Dunlop Latex — 2 inches (D65 / 14–19 ILD, soft); ≥95% certified organic content
- GOLS-Certified Organic Dunlop Latex — 2 inches (D65 / 14–19 ILD, soft); pillow-top comfort layer
- Individually Wrapped Innerspring Unit — up to 1,379 fabric-encased recycled steel coils in 7 ergonomic zones. Three interior zones — head/shoulder, hip/torso, and leg — vary wire gauge by body region. Four reinforced perimeter zones — left, right, head, and foot — provide edge support around the full perimeter. Patented coil design, made by Avocado. Each spring floats independently in food-grade, non-toxic, GOTS-compliant non-woven polypropylene fabric.
- GOLS-Certified Organic Dunlop Latex — 1 inch (D65 / 14–19 ILD, soft)
- 100% Organic Cotton Canvas — herringbone pattern
The one difference we’d probably make is maybe just a little more underlying support, but with the top most layer being a soft talalay foam layer. Based on what we know right now.
A few questions I have:
Avocado mattress offer tufting, but DIY options do not. What difference does this actually make? I realized that if we’d get a Green Medium and add a separate topper we’d lose the comfort benefit anyway, so I’m not sure that matters much.
Wool in the cover—does it actually help with temperature regulation and comfort? Avocado advertises what looks to be a pretty thick wool layer, and the temperature benefits seem appealing. Both APM and Turmerry offer wool in their covers, but maybe not as much. Do you think we’d notice in terms of temperature and comfort? I’ve realized that if we get a topper from Avocado, we’d also lose those benefits, if they are real, which is another positive toward other options.
Avocado also has a one inch layer of foam under the coils. What is that for and is it worth trying to replicate? It doesn’t seem like either Turmerry and APM offer that.
Lastly is just general advice about coils. APM offers a couple options, and Turmerry offers “Support Core (8 inches) (15.5g): Up to 1224 QuadCoil® pocketed coils from Texas Pocket Springs, with a butterfly-locking design” in their DIY Hybrid option. What should we actually be considering?
One benefit of the DIY Hybrid from Turmerry is that it’s highly customized (they allow you to customize layers of foam) but offers a 120 night trial—whereas other straight DIY don’t have that. But that’s not a make or break thing.
Any help, advice, or direction you can offer is deeply appreciated!
Edit to add: We’re looking for a queen.
