I have a 2" latex mattress topper that I keep in a closet to put on a pull out couch. When I was setting it up recently, the skin on my legs got very irritated. I took a closer look at the fabric on the bottom, and it does not appear to be cotton, despite it being sold as a cotton cover. I pulled out some fibers with tweezers and attempted to burn them and they glowed orange, but never lost their shape or turned to ash. Hopefully not fiberglass? What could this bottom fabric possibly be?

Cotton burns to ash and smells like burning paper. Fibers that glow orange without flaming, holding their shape rather than turning to ash, is a classic description people use for fiberglass — it doesn’t combust, it just chars/glows and keeps its filament structure. That said, some synthetics (like certain modified rayons or flame-retardant-treated fabrics) can also resist burning in confusing ways, so a burn test alone isn’t 100% conclusive without seeing it firsthand or knowing the specific product/brand.
