Hi. I used this site 8 yrs ago when I purchased a new latex mattress. It was (and of course still is!!) extremely helpful, so a very late thank you! My bed is a DIY from Sleep EZ- top blended Talalay medium, mid Dunlop 100% medium, bottom Dunlop 100% firm (total 10"). Absolutely LOVED this mattress for about 6 years but then noticed it started to sag where we slept and didn’t feel as much support. At some point I swapped the mid and top layers, but now for the last 6+ months (getting worse every day) I wake up with pretty bad hip and shoulder pain and often lower back pain. My partner says he’s fine.
I am 5’5", BMI 30-31, heaviest in the hips, side sleeper. He’s 6’, BMI 28-29, even body weight distribution, prefers back sleeping (but snores here), so also side. I sleep very hot, he does not. Generally we both like firm beds, but I think with my ageing body, I need more pressure point relief.
I went to our local furniture store and tried out some beds as there are SO many more options than 8 yrs ago! I really don’t prefer the Tempurpedic, even the very high end one that was really responsive. The cooling feature was awesome, but I don’t prefer that feel of memory foam. My favorite ended up being the Aireloom Firm pillowtop: Aireloom Andromeda Firm Luxetop King Mattress | Raymour & Flanigan
It felt soft but supportive, which I really liked.
I tried the Serta icomfort firm hybrid and the Beautyrest Black CX medium hybrid and was not crazy about either. Both felt a little too firm on my pressure points. The Stearns and Foster pillowtop was probably my second favorite https://www.raymourflanigan.com/mattresses/pillowtop-mattresses/stearns-foster-lux-estate-firm-euro-pillowtop-mattress-461019436
Additionally, I tried the Sleep Number, because I never have, but really enjoyed the i8, number ~35 (might have gone a little more firm), which was surprising because I think it has memory foam, but I didn’t feel like it was being swallowed.
So, a few questions. Since I loved my latex so much, should I consider going back to this and potentially adding a pillow top since I really liked those pillow tops at the store to add some additional pressure relief? I had a pillowtop innerspring prior to my latex and loved it, but it slept really hot and didn’t hold up very long.
Or, since my partner still likes our bed, should I consider adding a pillow top on my side now or are we really at the end of the life of this bed?
Additionally, if I got back to latex, are there adjustable bases that can be used? I really liked the ability to adjust, as I tried several in the stores.
Any other suggestions you have would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
