what topper did I buy? pure talalay or a blend or something else?

Hi all,

I made a bit of a rash decision today and bought from Craigslist, supposedly, a full size talalay latex mattress for my 10 year old son and a 3 inch queen size talalay topper for me. The full size mattress is still folded up in my car, but here are pictures of the topper. I brought it in and undid the cover thinking i’d wash the cover, and then got that sinking feeling. Here are some pics. The sinking feeling started when the foam/latex wasn’t milky white (is that a problem) and was degrading/beat up around the edges. There is a date (manufacture?) on the label of 2009. Eeks. I can supposedly get my $175 back for this, he claims that he’d sell it for $300 no problem.

The full size mattress has 6 inches of talalay-looking stuff, and another 1.5 or 2 of eggcrate, which i’m going to pull off and give away/toss. We both have allergies, and so I am hoping to reduce allergens and chemicals for us. I should probably just have paid retail. Then I wouldn’t be second guessing.

Thank you to all on this forum!!!

Hi sfoanna,

One of the pictures has a label that says “60K perf” and another one mentions Sleepcomp so if I had to guess I would say the off white pincore material in the pictures is probably Puralux continuous pour Dunlop latex that is supplied by Latexco / SleepComp. It’s most often a blend of about 20% natural and 80% synthetic latex and is generally a less costly version of latex.

While I do see some obvious wear and tear and some damage … I don’t see any serious visible damage that would significantly affect the performance of the latex (although I can’t tell if there is any softening from appearance).
