None of our local stores carry latex mattresses anymore, and we definitely want latex. We had one for almost ten years, on a adjustable bed, which worked very well for almost ten years, until it apparently wore out, became too firm and I started to get morning backaches. We replaced it with an inexpensive synthetic mattress which we found to be too firm, uncomfortable and also slept hot.
So now we’re back to looking for latex again. I’m not happy with having to order online and not being able to try it before buying, but seems like that‘s the only option.
So looking for recommendations on where to buy, how much to expect to pay for good quality, and any other helpful advice.
Sorry to hear about your backaches. The frequent use of an adjustable base will put some stress even on the most durable materials. This combined with a higher weight range may reduce the life of a mattress quite significantly so almost ten years for your old mattress is a good life span.
Online buying is the next best option you have if local shops don’t carry latex mattresses. I’d choose buying from a company that has beds with zippered covers and offer exchanges of comfort layers within the trial period. You can look through the Trusted Members of The Mattress Underground who have great quality/value mattresses with excellent construction. They fully disclose the materials and components used in their mattresses so that you can count on the mattress lasting and not starting to sag like your old mattress. Most of these companies have a wide selection of mattresses at various prices, are knowledgeable, experienced, and responsive to consumer questions and will certainly help you make an informed mattress purchase with the best chance of ensuring suitability. Make sure to give them your stats (Height, BMI, sleeping position(s) and any health conditions of the sleepers) and history with previous mattresses.
A good Latex mattress can be anywhere from a little under $1000 to several thousand dollars (depending on bed size and mattress type). Are you looking for an all-latex or latex hybrid mattress? What foundation will you be using? Will it go on the adjustable frame you have? You say you don’t want to ‘sleep hot’, . Memory foam is usually the culprit for sleeping hot so it’s good that you are looking into latex beds which are more breathable and temperature neutral. Layers and materials closer to your skin would have the most effect on how hot the mattress would sleep. So you may want to look at a mattress which has a breathable layer, and has a cover with a breathable cotton or wool construction, to allow air flow. Keep in mind your stats and PPP (Posture & alignment, Pressure relief and personal preferences) when looking at the construction of any mattress you are considering.
A quality latex mattress should retain its’ integrity for 10-15 years, as you can see in the mattress durability guidelines here, as you said in a post last May that you wanted to replace a 10 year old latex mattress that was ‘sagging’. You don’t say what area you live in, but most of the Trusted Members here offer a trial period to allow you time to test the mattress out. While we do not make recommendations, since a mattress is a personal choice unique to you, we can comment on any that you are considering.
