Which firmness level?

Hi! I have been persuaded to buy a high quality pocket coil mattress, most likely at the high-middle level of the spectrum of offerings from Vispring (I live in UK), which uses only natural fibers (primarily wool, some horsehair and cotton too). I have had the Eve original for about 4 years, and I wake up with a stiff and achy low back.

There are four choices of firmness, from soft to extra firm, and I am ambivalent about whether to get medium or firm. I am 5’2" and weigh about 130 lbs and have a loose sacroiliac joint which means I need a lot of support under my low back. But too firm a mattress gives me sore shoulders and possibly sore ankles and knees as well. My husband is heavier and taller and in principle likes a softer/medium mattress, but he thinks I need firm since I am always complaining about my low back. In the show room virtually all the Vispring mattresses are medium or soft, and since I am not esp. heavy, I am thinking I should go with the ‘average’ medium support.

It is tough to judge in the showroom as well because nearly all are on top of a divan (box-sprung foundation), which makes the mattress more ‘wobbly,’ and Vispring says it makes for the best sleep experience. I would prefer to use our existing solid foundation/platform bed with center support (not slats). Is this a poor choice?

Finally, my husband is a light sleeper and I would like to reduce motion transfer if possible (perhaps a zip & link?–but 50% more expensive). Would this work?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Since firmness is quite subjective and given your requirement for a “lot of support”, I wouldn’t want to guess at which firmness level would be the best match for your needs. Your light weight and tendency towards pressure point soreness would indicate going with a softer more conforming choice like medium but it still has to provide you with the level of support you require. Further complicating your choice is the issue with display models being on divans while you’re considering using a solid foundation.

Mattresses like the Vispring are generally designed as a system with their matching spring support system so using them on a solid platform would make them noticeably firmer and less conforming. There may even be warranty issues by using it on any base other than their matching system but you’d have to check into that. If you’re still considering using the mattress on your existing solid foundation I’d ask them to move the medium firmness model onto their carpeted floor to see how it feels there since that would be most similar.

Only you can determine which firmness ultimately works for you and meets your preferences, as well as how it feels without the matching divan. You should check whether they have a good return/exchange policy in case your initial choice doesn’t work out well in meeting your needs.

Hope this helps and that you find a great match!

I went to a mattress store in LA that had VISpring and Aireloom. I could tell VI was well built because of its springs. VI felt very traditional. I tested VI up to the $30k level.

I also tried Aireloom Preferred M1 Luxetop Firm for $6-7k. I like Aireloom much better. It had a much more comfortable comfort layer of latex and microcoils. VI might last longer, but it was not comfortable. “Pricy” and “well built” does not mean it is for you. Aireloom has M1 and M2 in Firm and Plush. Also check our the Aireloom Streamline Luxury Firm.

Another idea is adjustable firmness. Air Pedic air mattress is better than sleep number. AP has 3 bladders per side vs 1 bladder with Sleep Number. No hammocking with AP. With AP, imagine using a remote control to adjust firmness under your lower back? Amazing! Air Pedic is sold at Selectabed. AP 800 is most popular. Also, you can adust firmness on each side which would be perfect for you. Ask for Brian at Selectabed/Air Pedic. No I dont get a commission.

I guess the other option for adjustable firmness is FloBeds Vzone latex. Each side can be customized and top layer zoning can be customized. I dont like latex myself, but dont let that stop you!!!

I say go with Aireloom or Air Pedic!!!

Let me know what you decide!!! Im buying Aireloom M1 Luxetop Firm or Tempurpedic Luxe Adapt Firm myself in 2 weeks!!!
