Which is firmer - Big Fig or Brooklyn Bedding Plank Luxe? I’d prefer to try a Big Fig because I already tried and returned another brooklyn bedding mattress and I can’t use their return policy twice. Would a Big Fig be too firm for someone 212 lbs. who sleeps (mostly) on their back?
Hey there!
While I myself have not tried the Big Fig, I have heard it be compared to carpeted floor.
So, that’s definitely firm.

So, I will chime in here since I have been sleeping on the plank luxe for 2 years now. I am 6’ 220 (was 250+ when I bought it). I was looking for the firmest, but not hardest mattress I could find at the time.
There is difference between firm and hard.
The classic big fig is not as firm as the Plank Luxe but it is a bit harder. The Plank Luxe is closer to a 9-9.5/10 firmness and the classic fig is around a 7-7.5/10.
Both mattresses you sleep on the top of the mattress, but the quilted cover on the plank luxe, despite being a 50ILD, can still be comfortable for side sleepers (although most caution again it, my wife 5.4 135 and I are both 80% side sleepers). Where as side sleeper report that the Big Fit puts too much pressure on the hips and shoulders. For back sleepers, either will be fine, and stomach sleepers, the edge goes to the plank luxe.
Keep in mind that Big Fig just came out with 2 new mattresses. The Firm 9/10 and the Luxe 6.5/10. Likely to address the issues they faced with the classic.
Both are solid choices. The figs come in 12",13", and 13.5" progressively getting softer as they get taller. The one thing with the Figs that I am not a bit proponent of is the use of gels, thermogels for cooling. Generally, these technologies while having some scientific evidence that they work in other applications, when used in a mattress, their effectiveness and user comfort identity is often very overstated.
They do have a seemingly long warranty (for whatever warranties mean these days) 15/20/25 years which again aligns with the thickness of each mattress, as they get thicker, they extend the warranty 5 years each of the way up.
Lastly, whichever you choose. Select your foundation carefully. Big Fig’s foundation is excellent as are a few like this from @Arizona_Premium and there are others, but you want the slat spacing to be less than 3" or if you go with an adjustable base, be certain it has a solid deck, not the metal grid type. And remember, you will most likely need a new pillow, although as a back sleeper you may have one that hits the mark, but again choose wisely as a firmer mattress changes the position you lie on the mattress and will make pillow loft a critical factor.
Hope this helps
