Why do some firm mattresses feel supportive while others feel uncomfortable?

I am trying to understand why two mattresses that are both described as firm can feel completely different in terms of comfort and back support. Some firm mattresses feel stable and relieving, while others feel hard and fatiguing, especially after a full night’s sleep. I suspect it has more to do with construction, layering, and materials than firmness alone, but I would appreciate expert insight on what actually makes the difference. For someone looking for long-term spinal support rather than showroom softness, what are the key design factors to pay attention to? P.S I was diagnosed with Lumbar problem.

Firm mattresses feel different because “firm” is just a label, not a description of how a mattress actually behaves under your body over time. I sleep on a Plank Luxe and really like it, but I’ve tested a variety of toppers on top of it that were all considered firm, and the differences between materials were obvious right away and even more so overnight. The TempurPedic 3" memory foam topper felt firm at first but softened as it warmed up and let me and my wife sink, which changed alignment and created that stuck feeling in what I call hot lava quicksand. We also have an organic 3" wool topper, when it compressed, it remained firm, and although it did add contouring without ever feeling soft, but once compressed it basically behaved and took on the firmness like the mattress underneath it. Our 38 ILD Talalay latex topper was firm immediately and stayed firm, but with much more pushback, which actually made the bed feel firmer overall and changed how pressure showed up, especially throughout our bodies. All of these were firm, all felt firm, but they felt completely different because each material compresses, rebounds, and supports weight in its own way.

That’s why a firm latex mattress (say a 9/10 firmness) doesn’t feel anything like a the same firmness rating High Definition polyfoam mattress, and why natural fibers, fast response foams, and slow response foams all create different “types” of firm. On top of that, the support system under the comfort layers matters just as much. Pocketed coils, continuous coils, and foam cores all manage hip drop and alignment differently, which is why one firm mattress can feel stable and relieving while another feels hard and fatiguing. The takeaway is that firmness alone doesn’t tell you much. It’s the materials, how they respond under load, and how the support layer controls alignment that determine whether a firm mattress feels great or just feels hard. When I was in Arizona in October, I tested dozens of mattresses. One mattress, the Helix Plus Elite, was very firm feeling. Now they rate it at a 7, but while lying on it, it felt closer to an 8.5 - 9. The same went for the Bear Hybrid Elite, rated as a 7, but felt more like a 8 - 9. Oddly enough, the Helix, Bear and my Plank all felt similarly firm and flat. I did not feel myself sinking into any of them, actually a sleep on top of the mattress feel. But there was a secondary feeling. The hardness factor. The Helix had a much less hard feel than the Bear, which had a more cushioned feel than my plank luxe. When you sleep on a continuous coil mattress with an insulator pad and a thin layer of polyfoam or heavy weight cotton pad, you can end up with a firm mattress, but also a hard mattress, nothing cushioning or soft about it.

When a block of foam is tested for ILD, it receives a specific firmness rating. However, different foam materials can share the same ILD value while responding very differently under load. How a material behaves once body weight is applied can vary significantly. Factors like secondary support, often referred to as the “support factor,” also influence how a mattress feels, even when the measured firmness is the same.

In short, firmness can be objectively measured, but identical firmness values can feel very different depending on how the material responds to pressure. Likewise, materials with different measured firmness levels may feel similar in practice because of their unique response characteristics.

Ultimately, “feel” is influenced by more than just the measured firmness value, it depends heavily on the material’s behavior under real-world use.

The way you explained how different materials behave over time really clicked for me, especially the memory foam vs latex examples. I’ve definitely had that experience where something feels fine at first, then by morning it either feels too sinky or just kind of tiring on the body.

The firm vs hard distinction was also helpful. I think that’s exactly what I’ve been struggling to put into words — some beds feel firm but still supportive, while others are firm in a way that just feels unforgiving and not very comfortable after a full night.

This definitely reinforces that firmness ratings don’t tell the full story, and that how the materials respond under load and control alignment overnight matters a lot more than how it feels in a showroom.
