Why does Flobeds Foundation Smell?

I recently purchased a Flobeds latex mattress (with the organic cover) and a pine foundation. The foundation has had a pretty strong smell since I received it and I cannot figure out what it is and whether it could be harmful. Flobeds states that the foundation is made of wood, elmers wood glue, and wool and cotton with no added chemicals/fire retardants of any kind. However, the foundation smells almost like paint or some other kind of chemical. I can smell the wood also, but this smell does not smell like wood to me. I think it’s the material cover that smells, but I guess it could be the glue (although I doubt the glue would smell this strong). Does anyone have any idea what this smell is or has anyone else experienced this smell? I have tried airing it out for a while but the smell is still there. Thanks.

Hi Infantrytroop22,

I wouldn’t know what it could be without smelling it myself but other than the mattress itself there are only a few possibilities.

The first is the wood, the second is the glue, the third is the cotton, and the fourth is the wool.

If you can separate the cover from the rest of the foundation you should be able to discern whether it’s coming from the cover/quilting or the wooden foundation.

If it’s coming from the cover then my guess would be that it’s probably the initial odor of the wool.

There is nothing in the 4 materials that could possibly be harmful.
