I purchased the mattress in 2016 here in Syracuse. I loved it! I’m a back sleeper and sometimes side and am 5’3 140lb athletic build midlife female. I use a flat pillow and when on side a higher one.
My problem: in the past year I wake up with back-ache and can’t stand up straight and hips hurt just lying on my side reading in bed. Headaches too. I’m using foam rollers daily as my Quads are so tight. So I flipped and rotated the pillow top it helped some, not much. I slept on my firm chaise and woke up with no pain. None! I can walk and quads are loose. I slept on my leather, firm, Natuzzi chaise with no pillow in my back.
Question:
Is this natural organic mattress Dunlop or Talalay? I think it’s too soft. I tried the mattress without he topper and dare I say I think it’s better! Does a topper last only 5 years? Do I buy a new topper from sleep on latex? Ive been in so much Pain.
The bed is low profile with slats very sturdy. Vera Wang split box(10 years old) on the slatted bed. Please help as I have no clue the IDL of this pillow top which is extremely heavy. This bed is amazing quality, and I don’t want to incorrectly throw it away if it needs minor adjustments. I’m allergic to dustmites and always preferred firm mattresses. The Hampton mattresses are a cloud for me, FYI.
Which topper do I purchase if any. Maybe just sleep on the bed without topper?
Thanks so much!

Thanks for your questions, the concise history, description and experiments you’ve done thus far relating to the multiple types of pains you’ve started experiencing in the past year. Let’s see what might be going on.
I would hold off buying anything before you have a chance to determine a few more things.
The (9") of WJS Cazenovian has 6" of natural latex + 3" NR soft latex pillowtop on top of the cotton-wool batting Quilted organic cotton and wool cover made by WJ Southard Mattress. This mattress is using Dunlop latex from Sri Lanka
The bed uses good quality components and should last for much more than 5 years.
Even though your current split box seems to be sturdy, I always suggest a “ground up” assessment to make sure that there is nothing under the mattress that may be contributing to a premature sag within the mattress. I apply this rule of thumb whenever a mattress seems too soft, lack of alignment or sagging is experienced. To verify if the support system you are using is appropriate, place your mattress directly upon the floor to see if that makes any difference for you. If you feel any improvement then it is possible that the support system is the cause of your pains … or … there might be a combination of faulty/flexing foundation and core layer being not supportive enough for you.
You may also want to check if there is any sagging of either of the two layers to eliminate the possibility of a defective latex layer. This mattress has a 25 years warranty claim and I am sure that they’ll be happy to replace any defective layer.
Either way from your description of the “symptoms” with the “quads being so tight” after sleeping on this mattress and the “quads being loose” when sleeping on a firmer sleeping surface seem to indicate some lack of alignment due to improper support. Your body seems to have to work hard to compensate for a lack of deep support, hence your backaches, hip pains, and headaches. Alignment/support is the most important thing that a mattress does for you.
If putting the mattress on the floor does not improve your sleep, I’d certainly remove the topper and sleep on the mattress for long enough to give your body some time to adjust
I would certainly not “throw it away” this bed you have quite a few options to adjust it and get a good night sleep
Let us know what you find
Thank you so much, Phoenix!
I tried to edit and change the username as I agree with you. I cannot, so I requested support for it. The username is grey shaded and won’t change. Thanks fir noticing and recommending for me.
The topper is sagging in the middle. When I removed it I noticed it’s just really saggy. I slept in the middle of the king bed. I don’t know how to fix layers since it’s all sewed together. I could call them and ask them. Placement sounds like a great idea. Thanks for your suggestions. Now to keep my dog off it while on the floor. This mattress is HEAVY! So I’ll see how this goes. Thanks again!!

I am not sure what the results of your experiments with the “placement” of your mattress on the floor showed but I am just checking in with you (as promised in our short email interchange) to see if you have followed up with the vendor and perhaps found what the threshold impression depth that would qualify for a warranty claim is.
I’d suggest that you measure the depth of the indentation/ sag within your topper and your entire mattress take some photos when contacting them. To make such measurements just place a straight board or broomstick diagonally (where the impression is) and a ruler going perpendicular to the broomstick. Without applying any pressure to the top of the ruler, simply take several photos of the measurement and have them ready to email to the vendor.
Hi Phoenix!
Thank you so much. I called WJS and they were very helpful. On a seasonal shutdown and coming to my house when they return and helping me assess this matter.
I tried sleeping on just the mattress with no topper. Ok so this is very hard and seems like no cushion, so maybe box spring is hurting it. I do know I’ve been with little pain since not sleeping on the mattress, so I know it’s the mattress. I was in a lot of pain after sleeping on it just once. I’m hoping the visit from WJS will solve my issue. They did tell me that WJS and The retail store are owned by the same company. I did not know that. They seemed very eager to solve this and were also familiar with your name!
Thanks again for your help and for updating me. I appreciate the username change, as well!
Be well,
