For the past year I’ve needed a new mattress but due to working and lack of time I haven’t had a chance to research. The result of sleeping on a dipping innerspring mattress has resulted in multiple chiropractic appointments.
Recently I went to the Original Mattress Factory store and tried out a bunch of mattresses. Primarily they were innerspring. In the past I had issues with foam mattresses with feeling like I’m in quicksand when I sleep. I am an active sleeper so I had been staying away from the foam mattresses. However, while at the store the manager asked me to try a foam mattress out and it was very comfortable (the Serenity mattress). I’m now stuck between and the Orthopedic Ultra Plush mattress (innerspring).
In the store I felt a smidge bit more comfortable on the foam but I only tested it for 15 min and I’m worried about how it would sleep for a full 8 hours and long term how it would perform as a foam mattress.
Has anyone else conquered the fear? Was it a good experience? If anyone has any specific experience with these mattresses how has it worked out? Is it worth the risk?
Welcome to The Mattress Underground ! Thanks for your question.
Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey! You’re certainly not alone, Ella. 2020 was a topsy-turvy year in so many ways. From COVID illness and lockdowns to pandemic supply disruptions, many folks have been off normal schedules for a year+ now. I am sorry to hear that your dipping innerspring mattress has resulted in multiple chiropractic visits. Hopefully, we can help with your research process .
Nice work on the showroom visits and mattress testing! You are describing the inherent nature of memory foamand its slow response quality, one that makes it quite desirable for motion isolation and pressure relief. As an active sleeper, you may find memory foam’s “sinking in” the mattress makes for a difficult time changing positions throughout the night. You may find Phoenix’s articles "Matress Comfort Layers and "Mattress Support Cores"to be helpful overviews for understanding how comfort and support materials work together for providing an optimal mattress experience.
I visited the Original Mattress Factory web site in search of product spec details for both the Serenity mattress and Orthopedic Ultra Plush, neither of which had any meaningful details other than they are both two-sided mattresses. Which Serenity model did you prefer? The site features 3 models, 2 using memory foam as a comfort material and one using Talatech Talalay latex, it would be interesting to know if the Talalay model was the one that you found very comfortable. As you compare mattresses, ask the showroom team for spec details to determine the quality and durability of materials used.
“Conquering the fear” is a spot-on synopsis of many aspects of the mattress purchase process, Ella. Perhaps some consumers will come forward with comments on your mattress models of interest. Good luck with your research and send updates as you have time… .
