Would A 1" medium latex topper help me?

I have a latex for less bed. I put a 2" soft dunlop topper on the medium side of the flippable matress. It caused back pain , it was too soft I tried to sleep without it , it was too firm and i dont like the feel of the wool that is a top layer of the mattress. I flipped to soft dide of the mattress without the topper and it is almost right but not quite. Would a 1" medium dunlop topper make difference? I am a 98lb side sleeper. I dont like to sink in and hate the hammock effect. But anything too firm make me sore.

Hi DebMax,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround and thanks for your question.

It seems that you are on the cusp to the right setup, so this is really about making a small adjustment rather than changing everything. The 2 inch soft Dunlop topper was too much for your body weight and created that sinking or hammock effect, which likely led to your back pain. At the same time, the mattress on its own, especially on the medium side, felt too firm and uncomfortable, partly because of the wool layer. The fact that the soft side without a topper feels almost right is a good sign that you’re in the right range.

A 1 inch medium Dunlop topper would likely help fine tune things by adding a small amount of cushioning without letting you sink too much, because as you may know, latex offers some gentle pushback, whereas memoryfoam will allow you to sink.

At your weight, even a thin layer can make a noticeable difference, and medium firmness should keep your alignment more stable than soft. Another simple option is adding a thin mattress pad or cover to soften the feel of the wool without changing the support much. Overall, a 1 inch medium topper is a reasonable next step to get you that last bit of comfort without bringing back the issues you had before. Not many sell 1" latex toppers, but there are a couple out there to be had.

It is worth mentioning, that everything between you and the floor matters. Not exactly certain what two sided, dual firmness mattress you have, but it still needs to be on a solid, rigid foundation, with no flexing. Therefore, you want the slats to be less than 3" spaced, 2-3" wide and thick enough (3/4" or more) not to flex, even under your lighter weight. A mismatched foundation can be a back killer and mattress murderer real quick, particularly with a new mattress.

I have a very good solid wood platform. The bed is a Latex for Less flippable matress with a medium firm side and a soft side , it’s 2 years old. Thank you for your reply.
