Would you buy a floor model latex mattress?

I’ve an opportunity to get a great price on a floor model mattress. It’s exactly what we want and boxed up already to go. One of those fancy organic latex/wool mattresses. They did say we can take it out and try it if we want but we’ve already tried that model at another store. I kinda don’t want to say the name in case people find this and grab it before we do.
The store closed up just before the pandemic apparently and this has been in storage. For about 2 years before that they had 2-3 people text the mattress each weekend. It was a side hustle biz apparently.
That doesn’t seem like a lot of use to me for sure but I’m interested in feedback what people would do.

Pros:

  1. Mattress is barely used (no problem for me, certainly not the 1st used mattress I’ve had)
  2. Mattress is about 60% off
  3. Pretty sure I can get some more $ saved if I buy in cash or I could get the seller to throw in some other stuff from their store

Cons:

  1. I don’t know how the 20yr warranty would work if I am not the original purchaser, I guess I need to get that info from the seller. If I’m considered the buyer or not
  2. So I guess it’s really like a 16 yr warranty at this point.
  3. Technically it’s a used mattress

The closest I could find in price is Latex Mattress Factory- we could get the same thickness of layers and brand new, price is similar, warranty is unclear- at best it would be 10yr (I’m waiting to hear from them if the DIY mattresses have a warranty or not)

Anyway thoughts or would you do it or not?

Also I wanted to say that I have a friend in that area, she was able to vet the store as like, actually existing/having higher end natural whatever type stuff.

Hi dizzy,

Interesting question! Sounds like a great deal, cost wise, and you say you have tried out the same brand at a different store. A mattress is specific to you and your PPP(Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences)
And is particular to the stats (height, BMI sleeping position(s) of the sleepers, and any underlying health issues)
That being said, you have perfectly identified a few of the issues you may encounter:

Many mattress manufacturers/retailers are very good at finding issues to void a warranty. If you do purchase it, I would strongly advise you get the warranty conditions in writing. While an organic latex/wool mattress that meets your PPP is a great find, you say the mattress has been sitting in storage for several years; this can have an adverse effect on the materials and components based on how and where it was stored. Another potential red flag here is the vague information they provided on how much this was tested and for how long has it been on their floor before being taken to storage. What is their policy on floor model warranties? If the store closed again in the future or goes out of business, you would technically need to consider if the mattress has a manufacturer warranty. Would that be honored by the manufacturer in this circumstance? You’ll need to decide how much risk this involves and how comfortable you feel with taking such risk.

I’d take a quick look at the mattress specifications you need to know so you can compare the quality of the materials and components to the mattress durability guidelines hereto know exactly what materials are used in the components of the mattress, and at what densities. Any lack of transparency on exactly what’s in this mattress would cause me to dismiss it - no matter the price, so it comes down to what you are comfortable with, considering all this.

Though the final choice is entirely up to you, the benefit of buying a mattress from Latex Mattress Factory
or any of the other
trusted members
of the site, is that they provide excellent quality mattresses, are clear about materials and densities of components, and are up-front about warranties and have a good return/exchange policy. You might want to ask about their DIY option or mattress warranty on their dedicated forum page

Only you can tell which mattress is suitable for you and the risk level you are comfortable taking. It does sound like they are offering you a very deep discount – In the long run you may end up with a suitable mattress at a low price. Just be aware of the points above, an informed consumer is the best consumer.

I hope this helps.
