WTS: Never Opened Serta Perfect Sleeper Presidential Suite II Firm Double-sided King mattress

Brand new in the factory packaging. Just purchased this week. Includes box spring. We bought a two pack of the king mattresses and box springs since the retailer does not sell individual mattresses.

$875 delivered to north Jersey. I’ll drive outside the area, but I would charge a little more.

This is a really nice double-sided mattress. We got this one since the foam/latex thing isn’t for me, and this seemed to be the best innerspring mattress out there. PM me with a phone number if you’re interested.

Hi North Jersey,

I’m not so sure most people would would agree with you here (unless you’re talking about its ā€œniceā€ appearance) and I know that I certainly wouldn’t. If you’ve read the tutorial post you would also realize the risks involved in purchasing this mattress.

It doesn’t have any latex in the mattress so I’m not sure where the latex comment is coming from.

Serta tends to use low quality polyfoam in their mattresses and the continuous coil is also among the lowest cost coil designs available so from a quality perspective this isn’t a ā€œgood quality mattressā€ at all and it isn’t even close to the best innerspring mattress out there and I would put it on the lower end. To make an informed purchase of any mattress you would also need to know the foam density of all the foam layers to make sure you aren’t buying a problem with early foam softening and impressions which is much more likely with the density of foam that Serta typically uses.

There is a listing for a 6 pack of the same mattress here for a price that averages out to about $688 per mattress (for a king set) and I would consider reducing your price to well below that for someone that may want to consider buying a questionable quality second hand mattress.

This mattress doesn’t have any latex. I was just saying that a latex mattress isn’t for me, which is why I went for a firm innerspring mattress.

I’m not trying to sell a second-hand mattress and box spring. The set I’m selling is actually going to be delivered to me from the manufacturer this week, and I do not intend to remove it from the packaging. I’ll have the shipping manifest and the receipt from Sam’s Club to confirm this information, but I wouldn’t feel like it’s second hand if I were the buyer.

Granted, I was just basing my choice of mattress on andecdotal evidence, i.e., everyone who slept on one reported a great night’s sleep. To me, something is to be said for dealing with a known quantity, whether or not it represents the best value. I definitely would have preferred something manufactured using only domestic components.

Of course, I can’t speak to the longevity of the mattress, but the double-sided construction (I don’t mind flipping every month) and the fact that I opted for a firm mattress give me the expectation that it will last close to twice as long as the last Serta mattress I purchased in 2004 for around half the price of this hotel mattress. Sam’s Club has an unconditional return policy, so I feel like I can’t lose on this one. I contacted Sam’s Club about any restrictions on the return, and they told me I could return the mattress at any time. I actually returned a sofa to Costco after about 18 months when a spring started migrating through the cushion foam, and I’m hoping the return process would be about as easy at Sam’s Club. I probably wouldn’t return the mattress if I got a good five years out of it. If the value were that terrible, I don’t think institutional customers would be buying them. I know the high-end hotels where I stay usually have very comfortable mattresses.

I’m not sure my price is unreasonable, considering the mattress was shipped this week and that it’s new in the package. I paid around $800 each for these king mattresses including tax. Not everyone has a Sam’s Club membership, and not everyone wants to buy a six-pack of king mattresses. I’m also offering to deliver the mattress for free. This mattress in a king size sells for well over a thousand dollars when purchased invidually. I actually attempted to purchase a Presidential Suite mattress listed on Craigslist (someone did the same two-pack deal I did) that was listed at $1000, but I wasn’t fast enough. For those people looking for this specific mattress, this is a pretty good deal. I appreciate the feedback, and I’m hoping another forum member can benefit from my thread. I’ll post updates periodically on how my mattress works out for me if you think the information would be valuable. Would you like me to start a separate thread for my case study?

@NorthJersy,

I’ll take a crack at filling in the info that I read ā€˜in between the lines’

  1. This forum isn’t really a place where people post material for sale. Instead, it’s a place to let people learn how to buy a mattress through a methodology (steps in tutorial post, PPP), not what to buy or offers to sell.

  2. The mattress you’re selling is quite specifically what this forum strongly advises not to buy.

Perhaps had you followed the methodology and found yourself with a mattress that was unsuitable despite your best efforts, and soliciting if someone who had followed the methodology might want the mattress you are selling to align with their needs, it might be different.

Using an analogy, you essentially went to a sports car forum and asked if you could sell a non sporty used pickup truck. It’s just bad forum etiquette. Kijiji was the website you were looking for

I apologize. I thought the forum was oriented toward topics ā€œloosely connected with mattresses, sleeping, and all things connected.ā€

I’m not selling a used mattress, and I would rather have a brand new pickup than a sports car any day of the week.

Because this mattress is sold to the hospitality industry, this mattress is difficult to find through normal retail channels, which is why I finally special ordered a two pack. Given the fact that the Serta mattresses marketed to the hospitality industry have performed very well at the high-end hotels where I stay (the Beverly Hills Hotel, Ritz Carlton, JW Marriott, etc.), these mattresses don’t seem to be the bottom of the barrel by any means. I actually called up a JW Marriott resort where I stayed to find out what mattress they used because my wife and I slept so well. I 5’10 and 230, and my wife is 5’9" and 135 and she suffers severe joint pain from the residual effects of Lyme disease.

The local shop I spoke with wanted close to $1400 before delivery for a comparable double-sided mattress set. I’m working on confirming the density of the 1.5" foam in the comfort layer of the Serta, but even if the foam were of insufficient density, I have the option to return the mattress at any point. Worst case scenario, I get some great sleep initially, and then I return the mattress to the retailer for a refund if it doesn’t live up to my expectations after a couple of years.

Hi NorthJersy;

I’m not really saying you’re doing something against the rules - but similarly don’t expect a lot of ā€œloveā€. You’re selling a mattress which this forum specifically says is from a manufacturer to avoid (reason being, the mattress it’s likely garbage, regardless of what the ā€˜going price’ or ā€˜similar other mattresses’ might sell for). I appreciate it’s new, never used.

Moreover, since you deliberately bought surplus with the intent to resell, you’re borderline a commercial entity, and there are several commercial entities here who are prohibited from advertising and selling directly - many of whom will offer a superior mattress, lower cost, delivery, warranty, comfort exchange, and a few other things you cannot offer. Are you selling at a price which would see you make a profit on a per unit basis - i.e. what was your cost for 2 of them?

There isn’t any amount of ā€˜advertising’ the quality of Serta, or this mattress, which is going to change the basic premise of this website. Since you like trucks… I’ll modify my analogy: you’re on a Ford forum advertising a GM truck. It may be a fine GM truck, but you’re likely just going to get insults hurled about posting a GM truck on a Ford site.

If someone wants to buy it, fair enough - but don’t be shocked at the reception you’ve gotten.

I bought a second mattress because I didn’t have any other choice! If could have ordered a single mattress from Sam’s Club, I would have gladly paid a $200 premium. My Cost for two of those mattresses Was $1452 plus $101.64 in tax, which represents a $776.82 cost per set. I don’t think $100 to cover the delivery in my Ford Excursion of a king set within a 50 mile radius from my house is asking for too much, especially when I had to pay for a Sam’s Club membership to place the order. Besides, people usually try to haggle me down, anyway. Over $1250 is the minimum I’ve seen for this set, when you can even find it. I didn’t fall for fancy advertising, I actually slept on this one, albeit a ā€œplushā€ version.

I’m not too shocked at the reception. On a side note, I actually have a Chevy Suburban in addition to the Ford Excursion. I’ll check in every few months to let you know if you have cause to gloat.

****UPDATE: Serta got back to me within an hour, to report that the 1.5" polyurethane foam (PillowSoft) has a density of 1.2 lbs. I guess the guideline here is 1.5 for a double sided mattress, correct? At any rate, if it doesn’t hold up, I’ll get a refund. I’ll be sure to update one way or another. Oh yeah, and if any of you discerning individuals is interested in splitting this two-pack, let me know.

Hi NorthJersey,

The primary purpose of the forum is educational and to help members find better quality/value mattresses and it’s not meant as a vehicle for selling products or mattresses. Over the course of time I did allow some members to list products or mattresses that they had purchased and weren’t happy with as an exception with the idea that I would see how it went. In general these were existing members that had a history of posts on the forum that knew that there would likely be other members that may be interested in a good quality used product that they didn’t want for various reasons but that other members may wish to purchase. It was never meant to be a policy where the first post of a new member was to sell a mattress and as dn has mentioned commercial members are not allowed to advertise, sell, or promote specific products on the forum and this is on the edge of being a commercial post. This type of post would be more appropriate on Kijiji or Craigs List.

In the last week or two you are the second person whose first post was trying to sell a lower quality mattress with the belief that it was higher quality than it was and that hadn’t done much research into the quality or value of their purchase. I have to say I’m not particularly comfortable with this but since I hadn’t specified a policy to deal with this type of situation I decided to let it go in both cases even though both mattresses were not good value at the price that was being asked and were both the type of mattress that I would generally recommend avoiding completely because of the quality of the materials inside it and the risk of the purchase.

In the case of your mattress … this would be a very risky purchase from several levels.

First of all the quality of the materials in the mattress is low and there would be a substantial risk of foam softening and impressions over the course of time. Foam softening and impressions that are less than the warranty exclusions or that lead to the loss of comfort and support (and the need to replace the mattress) are not covered by warranty even for the original purchaser and in the case of a second hand purchase there would be no warranty at all.

Second … purchasing a mattress that you haven’t tried in person is always risky because there is no way for someone to know if the mattress would be suitable for their specific needs and preferences in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences).

If you are purchasing a mattress from a store like Sams Club that allows free returns then this can lower the risk of an online purchase where there is no way to know if the mattress is a suitable choice (although it would still leave you without a mattress and the need to spend the time and effort to find a new one) but if a purchaser isn’t the same as the name on the original receipt then there is no return policy at Sams Club at all so they would be stuck with a mattress they couldn’t use (I confirmed this with Sams Club).

Finally … at the price you are selling the mattress for it’s not particularly good value because it doesn’t compare well to other mattresses that also use similar low quality materials (or better materials) that sell for less. Serta and other major manufacturers are generally lower quality and/or overpriced compared to many other options that consumers have available to them (and this forum helps them find) so using a discount based on a new price as a reference point for ā€œvalueā€ can be very misleading when the original purchase was overpriced in the first place.

I will let this thread stand and not delete it only because I didn’t have a specific guideline in place prior to your post and had allowed ā€œfor saleā€ posts previously but in future I will only allow existing members with some prior history on the forum to sell their products here or make exceptions for mattresses or products on an individual basis for good quality materials or mattresses with prior permission and I’ve edited the forum rules accordingly.
