Your guidance please, Phoenix

Hi Phoenix,

We are shopping for our first real mattress and thankfully I have discovered this site. I have read the tutorials and many, many threads trying to educate myself and I thank you for your guidance and advice. I have learned a lot from others’ threads, but am now reaching out as I hope we are nearing a decision. I have visited several stores and called others and I’ve had a chance to test several factors and I think I’ve honed in on what I’m looking for. It is, unfortunately, a situation of trying to navigate buying from a store that is not ideal with a selection of the big brands that are on the “avoid” list. But I’ve ruled out all the other options in my local area, so it is a question of navigating and making the best decision in the circumstances. I would appreciate your help, if possible, in evaluating our current candidate for durability (as it passes the other tests) and, in a situation of the lesser of evils, trying to figure out particularly what all the foam layers and densities are in this mattress (or at least keeping the unknowns to a minimal thickness as you advise). I believe I have chosen one that has only two inches of foam to minimize the unknown weak links while providing the right amount of comfort/support for the side-sleeper that I am. (I would prefer not to try and find a mattress and a separate topper as I want to feel how they work together.) Separately, I had a chance to try a mattress with similar overall characteristics (to my understanding) at a hotel for three nights which helped confirm that I am on the right track for comfort and support (that was a Simmons Dreamscapes Choice Classic non-flip pocket coil tight top).

Here is a link to the candidate in question:

mattressmart.ca/Product/Details/Kingsdown/Sydney-Mattress-Only?size=Queen

And the spec jargon from the minimal online description:

Extra center support,
twice tempered,
foam encased.
Quilted all seasons wool-hollofil.
Comfort layers ½"foam,
½" foam. Support Layer
1" foam L45.
All foam low emission, made in Toronto.
Flexatron pad top and bottom.

I’ve also found this description online:

The store will not give me foam densities. On the phone the sales person described the three foam layers as 1/2’’ comfort layer, 1’’ firmer L45, and 1/2’’ memory foam with gel (bottom to top). The encasing foam she referred to as high density upholstery foam. She referred to the L45 foam as latex which I would be really surprised by at this price point. According to the store, Queen coil count is 1010.

I know this is a budget option (price is $569 for Queen, mattress only) but I would like to know as much as I can find out to help with the decision so that we don’t get surprises three months or three years down the road. Overall, if I can’t find out densities (which is likely) I would at least like to know that it is really only 2’’ total of unknown foam and what that might mean, again, for durability.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Tintin,

If you let me know your city or postal code I’d be happy to let you know about any of the better options or possibilities I’m aware of in your area.

If the store you are purchasing from either can’t or won’t provide you with all the information listed in this article then unfortunately it’s not possible to make any meaningful comments about it or identify any lower quality materials that would compromise the durability and useful life of the mattress and be a cause for concern.

If a mattress has more than about an inch or so of “unknown foam” in the design then I would treat “unknown” the same as “low quality” and I would avoid the mattress completely because it would be a very risky purchase.
