Will a hybrid mattress with 6" pocketed coils and a 2" medium latex layer, feel/sleep the same in a both a sewn mattress cover and an identical but zippered mattress cover. I’m just trying to get a feel for the effect that a zippered mattress cover may have, and any downside to using one with a DIY mattress approach.
Good to see you again and thanks for your question .
The “feel” of a sewn mattress cover vs. a zippered cover depends on the cover’s fabrication and construction more so than the presence of a zipper. Generally speaking, the zipper will be very low profile, surrounding a mesh of sorts and located underneath the comfort layer or support layer, depending on how your set up is as often the comfort layer is in a separate cover. You wouldn’t notice a difference in “feel” if both covers are identical in fabrication.
As the sewn mattress cover is part of the overall mattress/ not removable, it may have some construction features that would give some variations in “feel”, depending on the type quilting, edge-to-edge construction and so forth. Have you found a zippered cover that you like for your DIY which is identical to a sewn mattress cover you have seen? Also, the other consideration is what your long-term plans for the mattress are. Zippered covers allow for future comfort adjustments or replacement of layers, extending the useful life of the mattress.
BTW, do you have any updates on your DIY research? Good luck and looking forward to hearing more as your work moves forward
Thank-you for that. We have decided on DIY 6" quantum elite coils Bolsa, 3" talalay base, and 2" of medium or soft comfort layer. All in a Bamboo - Wool Zippered Mattress Cover. Will evaluate the top comfort layer when it arrives and decide on the soft or medium.
Great resource you coordinate. Actually the best resource. Will update on our final outcome once we get some sleep on it.
