3" Topper vs short hybrid 9" foam with 3" latex top layer

Hi!

Your information here has been helpful, especially the great explanation of the difference between talalay and Dunlop here- All latex vs latex hybrid - #2 by Sleep_EZ in deciding to go latex again.

Which lead me to a question…

I had a Iatex mattress that I loved but was too heavy to move across country. I bought it second hand- coir bottom, cashmere top it was fancy. I was surprised at how supportive a “soft” mattress was when I usually preferred firm- the magic of latex! It might have been talalay because it bounced, but I don’t know for sure, or the firmness level so that’s a bummer.

I have hyper mobility and joint pain and every part felt supported, even after very physically active days. I’m female, 5’3 165 lbs, sleep alone on my back/side sleeper, but lots of flipping.

My mattress is too soft and I sleep better on the couch so I was going to order a 3" med/firm size dunlop latex mattress topper or maybe a 2" talalay firm(med?) to stay within my very limited budget and give myself some support for my aching hips first and shoulders second.

Then I saw your closeout RV mattress the price is about the same/less than the topper. I could replace my bad mattress entirely, with a shorter but better quality one. The lighter weight means it’d be easily moved if needed- and the smaller width isn’t a bother.

I was one click away from ordering the mattress in desperation but on second thought I wasn’t sure about the soft rating of the Dunlop and wondered if a firmer topper would be better.

I know this is a pretty specific and timely question even without the personal preferences aspect- but I’d appreciate any input. I know that any of my choices from EZ Sleep will be a worthy upgrade even on my tight budget, but I’d like to minimize second guessing and avoid purchase.

Appreciate your time!

Hi Finniree and thanks for the inquiry and welcome to the forums! If your goal with the topper is to make your current mattress firmer, please note that normally neither a firm nor extra firm topper will help beyond a negligible degree, even if you purchased a 3” extra firm Dunlop topper. Support has to come from the mattress, not from the topper. Also, latex will conform to whatever surface it is on, so if your mattress is soft or sagging the topper will take on the characteristics of your mattress. Lastly, having a top layer that is not encased with the rest of the mattress will allow that top layer enough spatial freedom to move upwards when you lay on it, making for a very plush and enveloping feel, even if it’s an extra firm layer. About 75% of the customers that purchase a firm topper to make the mattress firmer end up returning it, that’s the only reason I mention these things. If you want to try it though, an extra firm 3" Dunlop topper has the best chance of working for you. If you get a 3” extra firm topper and find that it doesn’t work for you, you could either return it within 30 days minus the return fee, or you can use it to build an all-latex mattress by using it as the bottom layer of a do-it-yourself mattress.

However, if you prefer a firmer mattress, you might want to consider getting the 6" mattress on our other website here - Organic Latex Essential – Latex Mattress Factory

It’s made with 3" of medium Dunlop over 3" of firm Dunlop and should have an overall “firm” feel for someone at your height and weight.

Sounds like trying to make this “temporary” mattress work is a losing battle. It isn’t sinking or anything, just isn’t supportive or “reactive” enough for me. I’d be happy with a 50% comfort improvement right now, as I can’t invest in the long-term, my position as caregiver could be as short as 6 months or as long as 3+ years, it’s hard to say.

Would you consider the shorter RV mattress an budget friendly mid-term solution as a replacement instead of trying to make the current setup + topper work? It seems your customer feedback might lean that direction and I was hoping to spend under $500 at the top end, which really limits my options even for the mattress option you suggested.

if you’re looking for a mattress with an overall “medium” feel then I think the RV mattress is a great choice! I actually slept on that mattress myself for about 4 years, it was the best mattress I’d had at the time! Just FYI, I’m 6’ tall and weigh about 180 pounds and am strictly a side sleeper.
