Hi,

My husband and I are intending to purchase an adjustable base. He loves super ultra plush. I have periodic hip pain and lower back pain. We both sleep on our side but wake on our back. Super ultra plush is painful to me.

We were looking at naturepedic and I (170 pounds, 5’5") like naturepedic eos classic. Husband (165 pounds/ 5’10") says he can live with it (but he prefers eos pillowtop). Is it true that naturepedic eventually sags and compresses within the first two years? I liked that one could change out the top layers. I understand that sagging might be affected by the base. Does naturepedic’s adjustable base affect sagging?

Eos pillow top seriously hurt my hip. We did like halcyon but must go back to try it again.

I do like shifman so that is a possibility. My husband did not care for macroskey as much. He also didn’t like vispring as he says it is too firm. He likes his mattresses as soft as can be so we wanted the ability to have different firmness on each side. He did like Shifman though. We also like sleep number but understand that it readily breaks so we do not want to spend that kind of money just to later buy repairs. We also like king koil but do not like macys restocking fee.

Shifman snow day was the one we liked at a local manufacturer who didn’t have many in stock to look at. Shifman with latex was recommended to me although this seems to require a trip to bloomingdales who has an expensive return policy.

I would go Costco for real if their beds were better. We do not like hot tempur pedic. Actually I like it but he is a hot sleeper for real. So we are against it.

This mattress shopping is not fun. We actually hate it. I hate laying on all these mattresses and am hoping to not get bedbugs from the store. We take off our clothes and put it in a trash bag in the garage.

But we really need a mattress. My partner is now falling off the bed as we have a 25 year old mattress. :grinning:

Nap lab recommended saatva solair and we can go to the show room but I read terrible things about saatva. I also don’t know if nap lab is trustworthy as they get money from referrals. Thought of just ordering from mattress makers sight unseen as I really don’t feel like driving all the way to southern California. I think we are driving to Berkeley sleep works today to try a different local manufacturer.

Thanks for any help. So far, I’m leaning towards trying different Shifman Mattresses. Do they do well with an adjustable base for real? They seem rather thick for that. I read that they are best on their own standard base. Does an adjustable base void their warranty? I’m leaning towards naturepedic as well. We also like king koil orchid but it can’t be found anywhere anymore.

Adjustable bases should not affect sagging, at least not with our designs. I can’t speak for Naturepedic. Dual firmness options are available with all of our latex designs however if you could provide some specifications for the mattresses you tried and liked it would be very helpful for me when recommending one of our models.

Hi - I live in the Bay Area as well. I’m a consumer, like you, not an expert. I did buy a Saatva Classic a couple years ago and it’s not held up well, so I’d agree with your caution there. European Sleepworks in Berkeley, McRosky showroom in SF, Naturepedic showroom in SF all have good options and have some models that they can customize left/right so you can get “super ultra plush” for hubby and something more supportive for you.

The ones we liked were shifman snow day, naturepedic eos classic, and king koil orchid plush. I also liked Ethan Allen aliza luxe plush.

My husband loves the softest model there which was way too soft for me. I liked the midrange a bit better.

My husband and I have differing sleep needs. I’d definitely recommend trying to find a mattress that can be internally “split” and customized on each side to give you both what you want. I compromised with my husband and agreed to go softer than I wanted on our last mattress 6+ years ago, and ended up with constant lower back pain that I can’t get to quit. We just ordered a new split king from Sleep EZ, and I’m looking forward to getting it set up and hopefully sleeping better than I have in years!

@EuropeanSleep has some amazing mattress combinations. The Nordic II and Heritage were amazing, and they can craft any combination for a couple with varying preferences.

Thanks. I’m really liking the heritage. My husband wants the ultra soft Nordic 2… but it is 2 soft for me for real. The heritage 1.7 is great.

Thank you for this info about saatva. I think we are going to go with European sleep works or nature pedic although we have fog trying to talk us into sleep number.

Does sleep ez have in store ability? Thanks for the advice. I won’t go softer. I don’t want constant back pain.
