Ok so, I bought a mattress a number of years ago. I was told it is 100% talalay. It has recently become uncomfortable. The encasement is not zippered. Initial questions are, 1) can I cut the encasement and add a zipper? If not can you recommend one. 2) once inside can you easily identify the ‘bad’ layers? 3) is is possible to identify talalay vs dunlop?

You can add one of our zippered mattress covers but you cannot add a zipper to the one you have. Every mattress will wear from the top down so your top layer is what will show the most wear and tear and will need to be removed. Problem is it’s probably glued to the layer below and could be very difficult to remove if they used a lot of glue. If you are successful in removing the top layer then you will just need to test what’s left for any softening by taking your hand and just pushing down in different areas to see if there is any differences in resistance. If so then that layer has to go also. You can then keep what’s still good and add to it. Use a seam ripper and remove two adjacent sides, and then try to remove the layers to test out. One you find the bad layer, replace it with a new one, do a poor man’s stitch until you are happy with the result. Once you got the right comfort, you can get a new case.
