The Mattress Underground (TMU) offers free consumer subscription & paid membership for manufacturers or retailers.

Consumer Subscription, discounts, and other benefits are free and require the consumer to create an account on the Mattress Forum and join/start a discussion in TMU’s growing community.

Retailer & Manufacturer Business Membership is offered to manufacturers, retailers, and suppliers in North America that meet TMU’s rigorous standards and criteria centered around transparency, quality, and customer satisfaction.

TMU is regarded as a genuine and reputable source of mattress education and information that is actively connecting consumers and sellers. As an unbiased third party, TMU is leveraging its ability, knowledge, and experience to validate the better sleep and mattress retailers/manufacturers across US and Canada to the benefit of both - the paying customer and the manufacturer/retailer themselves.

Companies that would like to be considered for membership, and also share the spirit, ideals, and values of this site are encouraged to fill out the Prospective Membership Application Form as the first step in a relationship based on mutual respect between customers, and the company itself. Such companies that are accountable to their actual paying consumer and have their best interest at heart are bound to generate a long-standing business reputation and attract an ever-growing, loyal, and satisfied customer base.

As we are continuing to bring TMU to the next level, your support of our goals, services, and of TMU consumer followers make it possible! There are many parts of a longer-term plan which we believe will further increase the value and the reach of this project. We know that we can only succeed if you do.

Together, we really can make a difference.

HI
So glad we found you! We are SO confused!!!
We ordered and returned two bed sets from two different department stores and we are now desperate to make the right choice.!

The beds that were delivered to us were COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than the beds that we tried on the show room.floors…REALLY different in very obvious ways…Has this happened to other people? We are going to visit one of your recommended retailers tonight so any info you can give us asap would be appreciated!
Thanks!!!

Hi Capital Bean,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum!

I’m sorry you’ve had some issues with two of your recent department store purchases. When you say the products were completely different, do you mean that they had a different name, or different ticking (covering), or were a different comfort designation (e.g., plush instead of firm)? Or when you say different, do you mean that the item felt different from the showroom model you tested, but what was delivered was the same brand/name/plushness as what you ordered?

It is normal that a new mattress being delivered will feel different (usually firmer) than the showroom model, as no one would have used the item and reduced some of the “false firmness” that a new mattress will have for the first few months. Also, some stores do not change out their floor models very frequently so this difference from showroom model to new mattress can be exaggerated.

If you were delivered a totally different item than what you tested, you definitely should ask for a replacement. While mistakes of course will happen with delivery and an incorrect item can be brought out to your home, I’ve always been surprised that some retailers will have policies in place (often in their fine print) that allow them to substitute “similar or like” products for what was ordered. This I have never understood, as when you go through the time to test a mattress you should get the exact same model as what you chose in the showroom.

Without more complete information I really can’t provide much more detailed commentary on the differences in what you tested and what you received, but if you reply back I can perhaps shed more light on what may have happened or help manage your expectations of what to expect from showroom to home delivery.

If you’re looking for more information about how to shop for a mattress, the first place to start your research is the mattress shopping tutorial here which includes all the basic information, steps, and guidelines that can help you make the best possible choice … and perhaps more importantly know how and why to avoid the worst ones.

Two of the most important links in the tutorial that I would especially make sure you’ve read are post #2 here which has more about the different ways to choose a suitable mattress (either locally or online) that is the best “match” for you in terms of “comfort”, firmness, and PPP that can help you assess and minimize the risks of making a choice that doesn’t turn out as well as you hoped for and post #13 here which has more about the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase which can help you make more meaningful quality/value comparisons between mattresses in terms of suitability (how well he will sleep), durability (how long he will sleep well), and the overall value of a mattress compared to your other finalists based on all the parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you (including the price of course and the options you have available after a purchase if your choice doesn’t turn out as well as you hoped for).

Also, make sure that you find out information listed here so you can compare the quality of the materials and components to the durability guidelines here to make sure there are no lower quality materials or weak links in a mattress that would be a cause for concern relative to the durability and useful life of a mattress before making any purchase.

hello,

There is a broken link on your site. I couldn’t find a “contact us” email, nor a forum for problems with the website, so I’m writing here.

The broken link is on this page: Mattress Shopping Tutorial - The Mattress Underground

It’s the hotlink for “mattresses section” Mattresses - The Mattress Underground, listed under step one below:

STEP 1: Gather some basic information about mattress materials and construction which can help you ask better questions and help you to identify the people who know what they are talking about. Scanning (not studying) the overviews in the mattresses section will help with this. For those who wish more detailed information, the additional pages in each section may also be of interest along with questions on the forum may be helpful but they may be more complex than you need and this is not really necessary if you connect with people who already know what you would otherwise need to learn. An hour spent reading the overviews will give you more knowledge about mattress materials and construction than many of the salespeople who sell mattresses at mainstream outlets and will give you the knowledge to ask more meaningful questions.

Hi gretagrip.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum!

Thanks for taking the time to mention the broken link. I appreciate it! The link is now working.

FYI to get in touch with me or the admin on the site you need to be logged in and either click the “More” button under Phoenix profile with two options of either sending an email or a PM. Or you can use the Contact link at the very top of each page.
