Back into the DIY rabbit hole. Hybrid build advice

Got some good advice on Reddit, but figured I would go to the source for more thoughts.

I’ve suffered with mid-lower back pain for years, tried the DIY latex route and had no success after over a year of tinkering (and a 51 reply thread here)

Bought a Birch Natural mattress a few months back and while a definite improvement over what we had, was still not quite right. We think it’s a tad soft, but mainly in the coils. It has a rather thin comfort layer (some wool batting and a 2" piece of soft dunlop)

Figured that while there are options for mattresses that can be serviced, it’s just not the same as DIY, so here we are again.

So, I bought a 15.5g Texas Pocket Spring coil unit and ordered their 12" stretch cover thinking 3-4" is more than enough for a comfort layer based on our past experiences.

I’m debating on what to use for that comfort layer and likely overthinking it.

6’2" 185lb side sleeper, I’m torn between a combination of polyfoams and/or dunlop and/or memory foam. I know I don’t really like Talalay, that is for certain.

Comfort / Transition Layers I’m researching:

1-2" Sleep on Latex Soft (Have some and replicates resistance of soft talalay without the pushback, but it’s extremely soft, maybe too soft)
1-2" Sleep on Latex Medium
1-2" Foam by Mail Dunlop 29ILD (Said to be more dense/supportive than most typical dunlop)
2" Foam by Mail 4lb memory foam
1-2" Foam N More 4lb Gel memory foam
1-2" Foam N More HD23 polyfoam
1-2" Foam by Mail HD36

Hi Nick,

I recommend reaching out to the team at @Latex_Mattress_Fact1. They’re highly skilled and could be a great fit for your project. It’s often more effective to have one team handle the project from start to finish. Bringing in multiple vendors, even reputable ones, can complicate the process and make it harder to predict the final outcome.

The team at Latex Mattress uses their products daily, giving them valuable insights into how their foams perform with different body types and profiles.

For this particular project, I think it would be best to keep things streamlined with one dedicated team.

Hi Nick 7790 and welcome back to the Mattress Underground! And thanks for reaching out on this! I’m not familiar enough with the poly-foam and memory foam options you referenced, so I can only give you advice for latex, which is that it really seems two 2" medium Dunlop layers is almost certainly the best choice for the latex layers.
