Beauty rest Delany

Bought this at Sleep Country . First experience off gas in bedroom could have killed a small animal . Wonder about origin of memory foam materials and safety of sleeping on this. Any experiences with this appreciated

Hi Jason87,

The only reliable way to to assess the “safety” of different materials in more general terms is based on lab tests and the certifications they have for harmful substances and VOCs so that you have some assurance than the VOCs are below the testing limits for the certification (see post #2 here for more information about some of the more reliable “safety” certifications). If the materials in a mattress or the mattress itself has a reliable “safety” certification then for most people they would certainly be “safe enough” … regardless of the type of material or the name of the manufacturer on the label.

Simmons is on the CertiPUR list here so all the polyfoam and memory foam in their mattress would be certified so they would certainly be “safe enough” for most people and VOC’s and offgassing wouldn’t be an issue. Any initial smell wouldn’t be harmful and should dissipate fairly quickly once you’ve given it a chance to air out. Removing your sheets and bedding during the day will help it to air out a little faster.

Having said that … I would be much more concerned with the quality and durability of the materials in Simmons mattresses. All the major brands such as Sealy/Stearns & Foster, Simmons, and Serta all tend to use lower quality and less durable materials in their mattresses than most of their smaller competitors that will tend to soften or break down prematurely relative to the price you pay which is why I would generally suggest avoiding all of them completely (along with most of the retailers that focus on them as well) regardless of how they may feel in a showroom along with any mattress where you aren’t able to find out the type and quality/durability of the materials inside it (see the guidelines here along with post #3 here and post #12 here and post #404 here).
