Big people looking for mattress that will suit us both

Me and my partner are both 6’5", I’m a bit over 300 lbs and he’s around 240. He sleeps on his side and tends to move a bit when he’s sleeping. I prefer a pretty firm mattress, sleep on my back, and pretty much stay in one place. I think on the firmer side of medium would probably be a good compromise.

We’re finally making the move from a queen to a king size bed, and I’m in a place where I can spend a bit more on a quality mattress that will work well for both of us. That being said I’m a bit hesitant to shell out $2000 for something like the Titan Plus Elite (recommended by a good friend with similar build, but who was able to find a better deal than what I’m finding).

Recommendations both for mattress and how to find a better deal would be very appreciated!

Hi ohtheinanity,
Welcome to the community.

Finding a mattress with a strong enough support system for a pair of larger folks such as yourselves isn’t always an easy task, but there are some great choices out there.

Since you mentioned the Titan Plus Elite, I can tell you it’s a great mattress. When it was first introduced in July 2024, I tried it at the Show and it felt great right from the start, so I ordered one for our guest bedroom. It combines 3z’s brand’s most robust support system, an 8" 13.5 gauge edge-to-edge support spring system, along with a very comfortable medium-firm, leaning firm feel that has a soft landing yet remains supportive. It also uses a layer of microcoils to increase airflow and help control heat buildup.

My wife and I happen to sleep on the Plank Luxe, which is a bit firmer (also using their 13.5 gauge coil system, but in a 6" configuration as it is a two sized mattress, with one side being very firm and the other firm), and we are 6’0" 220 lbs and 5’4" 135 lbs.

3z uses MAP pricing, so it’s not easy to find lower advertised pricing than what you see online, as doing so could violate 3z authorized dealer agreements, which is why you may not be seeing any advertised pricing variations.

While I love the Titan Plus Elite, Plank Luxe, and the new Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Elite, which is BB’s newest mattress and one I just got for another guest room, there are certainly other mattresses that can accommodate both of your sizes, weight, and comfort preferences.

I know a few of our Trusted Members are likely to chime in. Just remember to rotate your mattress every 3 months for even wear, just be conscience if the final mattress you choose has targeted or asymmetrically zoning.

More importantly, choose your foundation wisely. If you select a slatted foundation, keep slat spacing under 3", with 2–3" slat width, and at least 3/4" thick wood, or a wood type that does not flex. A poor foundation is a mattress killer, and in your case, the two of you are over 500 lbs combined. Something like Mattress Foundations Terra or Terra Bunkie is a great example of what a robust, solid foundation looks like.

Naturally, there are also excellent bed frames out there that incorporate those features, made with quality handcrafted wood components. I’ve seen some great examples at @EuropeanSleep. Since they primarily offer Latex/Latex Hybrid mattresses, a more robust bed frame is necessary for the heavier latex components. A proper foundation is simply key to eliminating some of the factors that can compromise a mattress over time.

You are in good hands here at TMU. That Titan Plus Elite is a very nice choice. Our Trusted Member @yawnder happens to be an authorized dealer for that mattress and has a very knowledgeable staff should you decide to go in that direction.

Finally, carefully consider the new pillows you’ll be ordering. When you change the firmness of your mattress, the loft and firmness of your pillow will almost always need some adjustment based on your sleep position, mattress firmness and where your body rests on or in the mattress. Mattress and foundation first, followed by the appropriate pillow choice. Many times, folks get a new mattress and experience a slow adaptation period, not realizing it isn’t the mattress itself, but the pillow(s) being used.

Best of luck,
Maverick.
