Building a Latex hybrid mattress, deciding on 3" vs 5" latex

Hello! This is my first time building or buying a mattress, my current mattress is an old saggy hand me down from my parents 10+ years ago. This past Fall I bought a 3" soft Dunlap topper to see if I like latex, and that’s been going well so I’m ready to upgrade the rest of the mattress situation.

About me:

  • Female
  • 5’5"
  • 220lbs
  • Mostly side sleeper, some stomach and back sleeping. I tend to move around a lot as I’m falling asleep.
  • Prefer soft cushy mattresses
  • Tend to sleep hot
  • Occasional lower back pain
  • On top of the mattress I have a waterproof protector, a heated mattress pad (seasonal), and flannel sheets (also seasonal). With all this I don’t think I feel the flexibility of the mattress so much.
  • Would prefer a shorter mattress due to having a tall bed frame (need my little dog to be able to jump up, plus I sit on the edge when I get dressed)

Since I already have a 3" soft latex layer, I’m planning to use that as my comfort layer on top. I’m looking at the 6" Caliber edge coils as the support layer, with the organic cotton cover. This would be a 9" mattress, which seems like a good height and would be nice budget-wise. But I’m a little concerned it won’t be soft/cushy enough for me, so I’m considering adding in a 2" medium latex layer in the middle. Does it seem worthwhile to add that extra 2" of latex? With that much latex on top, are the coils even going to be noticeable? I could swap out the coils+2" latex for 6" of medium latex, but then I’m concerned about edge support.

Thanks!
