Comfort Tech vs Nest & Wild vs DIY Foam Factory opinions

I’m a bit of a princess and a pea. It has taken me over 30 different pillows to find one I like and now Im DIYing my own pillow. Trying to avoid doing the same thing with mattresses. Im 175# side sleeper and occasionally on my back. Ive been trying out different mattress and topper configurations for 3 months now and have learned a bit but still haven’t hit the sweet spot.

Currently Im on a 13” Diamond Plush Copper Cool Hybrid with a 2” of soft Dunlop latex topper. Its alright as Im not too achey in the morning but prefer a height of 10-12” and I don’t really like the latex feel but the mattress is too firm without it.

In the spare room I have a medium SOL that I find too firm on its own but leaves me without aches in the morning with a 3” soft latex topper on top. Problem is I don’t find it that comfortable when I wake up and don’t really like the latex feel but my body seems to like the combo.

I have tried a cuddle ewe 3” wool topper that I got on ebay with a stitching defect and it didn’t help at all. Where it compressed under my body it felt firmer and added a bit of pressure to my joints that I didn’t like.

I have also tried a 2.5” Malouf memory foam topper. Slept hot and didn’t like how I would sink deeper throughout the night as I got hotter. I like the sinking/hugging but with support feel in the store of the Tempurpedic adapt medium mattress but don’t want to spend $1500 on something I can’t return only to find it sleeps hot, or sags over time, or is just not comfortable overnight.

I like a bit of a sinking feeling but still need support and don’t want to sleep hot.

I have tried out a hybrid and latex mattress setup but haven’t tried a foam combo. Since Ive already invested a good bit into mattresses Im am looking to try a decent foam mattress for a reasonable price and a good return policy is a bonus.

Im am somewhat interested in what I have read about Serene foam. In searching for Serene foam I came across the 10” Comfort Tech at Costco for $259 for Twin XL. Im wondering if it has fiberglass? It has 2” of Serene foam on an 8” HD base. Wondering if this would be plush enough or if I would prefer 3” of Serene foam? Also wondering about longevity?

I just came across Nest & Wild 12” Original all foam mattress. Looks like a good company with good customer service, made in USA, and good reviews. A Twin XL is $500+. I don’t see any reviews that are less than 5 star so wondering if the reviews are filtered? Any one have feedback on their mattresses?

I was also thinking I could DIY it from the Foam Factory. A 6” base of HD36 plus 3” of 4lb memory foam or a 3” Serene foam topper on top. But I would prefer an 8” base layer. Is there anywhere else that sells quality HD 8” layer for a reasonable price. Any feedback on this store and the quality of their foam as Ive read mixed reviews and that they filter their reviews?

Any other foam mattresses I should research or other comments or suggestions?

Hey there Spincycle,
Wow, so you have a pillow menagerie like me. Except I still have every pillow i have tried, all over the place in every bedroom in the house.

Although it is easier to trial and error through a bunch of pillows than it is a group of mattresses, it is not uncommon or unheard of to trial a few mattresses.

Diamond actually makes some nice mattresses in the USA. I am not a big advocate of mineral infused foams. Mattress manufactures have stated that over time, the mineral/copper infusions pull the moisture from the foam and causes the foam to crumble over time. So be cautious with any infused foams.

Speaking with another sleeper who was having similar issues as you, a solution was found with a wool topper with a latex core. Something like this one or this one and even this one

It is a bit pricey but there are some options out there. The natural sleep store offers a couple of toppers, one by harvest, that has a latex core with a cotton or wool cover and a few others, such as the wooly topper that offers a wool and microcoil combination. There is even a horsehair and wool/cashmere topper that a fellow MUGster purchased and said it is just great.

If you are generally happy with your mattress, focusing more by adding a great topper may be the better solution.

The DIY with 3" of memory foam, you may find hot, so again use caution when doing a DIY. You would be better served collaborating with a Trusted Member here, like @Arizona_Premium or @Latex_Mattress_Fact1 to narrow down the best combination as they are sharp shooters when it comes to successfully helping folks DIY.

Often, taking a step back and looking at your situation from a different view can help you think this through a bit better.

Good luck with it,

Maverick.
