I have a king latex mattress that we purchased from Savvy Rest about 12 years ago. My husband (5’10”, 240lbs) is happy with his side—all Dunlop, medium over firm over firm (all 3” layers). My side is also Dunlop, soft-medium-firm, and it’s like sleeping on a slab of concrete (the soft lauer was replaced 3y ago under warranty when the original broke down).
I’m 5’2”, 132lbs—the S-M-F was ok when I weighed 15lbs more but not now. I’m a back and side sleeper. It feels better on my back but even laying on my side to read a book causes hip and shoulder pain. I added a 3” soft topper from SleepOn Latex but it made my husband’s back hurt. Then instead I tried a 2” twin soft topper (same brand) from my daughter’s bed (she’s away at school) and it’s marginally better but I still am sore on my side and it wakes me up repeatedly at night.
In reading other posts, I see Talalay suggested—is that my best bet? Often the dividing point is 130lbs and I’m right on that line. Thanks for any suggestions.
Hi Slowdown and welcome to the forums! Yes, I’m certain that getting some Talalay either on or in the mattress will help with your pressure point issues. If you want to improve your side without affecting your partner’s side, my advice is to start by replacing your soft Dunlop with a soft Talalay to see how that goes. If you’re still getting hip pain / shoulder pain, then you can change the medium Dunlop to medium Talalay. If that’s still too firm, then you can take out your bottom firm layer and put the medium Dunlop back in to sleep on soft Talalay over medium Talalay over medium Dunlop.

Talalay is helpful. 3" is better than 2" for you (but probably not for your husband as it sounds like he needs a firmer mattress). Also, check into pillows - both the pillow you sleep on and in addition, consider putting one in between your knees when on your side.

Thank you! Are there recommended places to buy standalone layers of Talalay? Are there quality differences between those places?
